ernokaikkonen 0 #26 December 27, 2002 QuoteI understand what you're saying, but, don't you think is 'Morally' wrong, if you think not, let's clone Hitler again, how about that? I don't care where the genes come from, the problem I have is with the increased potential of disfigured/unhealthy babies as a result of cloning. And, well, the overall pointlessness of the idea; there are enough people on the planet as it is, without articial ways of making more of us.
narcimund 0 #27 December 27, 2002 Quotethere are enough people on the planet as it is, without articial ways of making more of us. How strange. Wasn't someone complaining in another thread that the human population is about to collapse because so many straight people are turning gay? Muenkel 0 #28 December 27, 2002 The issue of cloning humans will always be debated simply because a huge percentage of the world's population does believe in God and that He/She/It holds the keys to life and death.

billvon 3,107 #30 December 27, 2002 >I just don't get the point. Why bother cloning a human? Three reasons I can think of. One, it provides another way for an infertile couple to have a child, or to avoid expressing a recessive genetic abnormality carried by the parents. Two, with further research, it may allow a human to essentially grow their own spare parts. Note that, today, you could do this by cloning yourself and killing off the resulting child to get the spare parts - in the future it will likely be possible to clone _just_ the organs/systems you need. I can see a huge moral problem with killing a child for spare parts, but not much of a moral problem in using your own cells to create a new heart (and associated vasculature) for yourself. Three (and this is a very minor issue) we will learn a great deal about telomere erosion, oncogene activation, cellular apoptosis etc just attempting to do it, and that will have huge impacts on treating old age and cancer. It is minor because other research can produce the same results; research into human cloning will just provide those results a bit faster.

That is indeed a danger. However, one might use the same argument against IVF - it is prone to multiple (and therefore much higher risk) pregnancies. Why not outlaw it? Because the parents are in a better position than you or I to decide if the risk is worth it.
jceman 1 #32 December 27, 2002 QuoteOther than getting too hung up on cheesy science fiction movie plots, I completely fail to understand in the least why this is "scary". Actually, I have to throwin with Jessd on this one, Narci. While the issue of cloning people doesn't really bother me as much as some others if you saw the creature that announced the cloning, you'd be scared too; her society believes earthly humans were cloned by some alien race from sowewhere in space. If you saw her eyes and the eerie otherwordly look in them as she made the announcement, you'd believe it! I swear Christopher Lloyd as the Rev. Jim Ignatowski looked normal compared to her. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
DZBone 0 #33 December 28, 2002 Quotewe will learn a great deal about telomere erosion, oncogene activation, cellular apoptosis etc These are good reasons to avoid human cloning right now. Cloning technology is simply not ready. Once these are worked out, it should be a very viable and happy alternative for couples who can't have children any other way... BTW, solving these may solve the aging problem as well! Long live longevity! _________________________________________________ If you hadn't read this, would it have made a sound? SpeedRacer 1 #43 December 28, 2002 well, I'm an unemployed molecular biologist. I suppose I could spare some time to clone up a few choice female humans right now.
