Just found out my local Pharmacy sold out. What a rude awakening!

Recommended Posts

This morning I dialed the # of the local Pharmacy that I've been doing business with for the last 15 years and was greeted by a recording that said "Thank you for calling Smith's pharmacy....".

Must've mis-dialed, I thought. Oh well, hang up and dial again. Same recording. This time I stayed on the line through the endless drone of an automated answering machine to speak with a living, breathing person.

When the "pharmacy associate" answered, I told her that I had dialed
"Ideal pharmacy", to speak with Charlene and have a prescription refilled. She replied that Smith's grocery had bought out Ideal pharmacy, and that they were now in possession of my account information and could supply the needed drug.

I gave her the Rx # and asked the cost (on certain brand name drugs my ins. only covers a percentage). After awhile on hold, she came back with a price that would cost me double (to the penny) what I had been paying.

Needless to say I politely cancelled the refill, called wally-world and got a price that was actually a buck less than I'd been paying. They in turn, called Smith's and had my info transferred to them. Problem solved.

What bothers me about the whole situation is after all the years of doing business with Dick and Charlene (the owners of Ideal pharmacy), I didn't receive so much as a note or phone call saying they were selling my account.

They were a small family owned business, and I always dealt with Charlene directly (she was a pharmacist, and worked behind the counter). She and Dick have known my son since he was born, and know as much about my personal life as many of the people I work with, so I'm more than a little disappointed.

The vision in my head is of Dick and Charlene running away with a handful of cash while yelling "thanks for the dough, sucker", just after they give me a swift kick in the nuts.

I wouldn't put that nasty of a spin on it. Think of it more as a couple that has worked many years building a business. Countless hours while scraping to make ends meet in the beginning. 20 or 30 years later a big company came along and offered them a truck load of cash. They saw the opportunity to retire, spend more time with kids or grand kids, buy that vacation house, unload the burden of running the business in shaky financial times, etc etc etc. Remember....it's nothing personal....just business.

You're right Clay (Damn I hate it when you're right! :P).

What bothers me though is that it was personal. I don't mean like a personal attack, but rather that they had a very personal relationship with many of their customers. Would've been nice if they had at least sent notices to everyone.

True....I can kind of understand though. I'm sure it wasn't any easy decision on their part. Probably VERY stressful in fact. I would bet they had to make the decision of selling out now while the gettin is good or facing some pretty tough odds when the chain decided to open up a store across the street to drive them out of business. If it was me.....I would have sent out some cards or something. Just to let everyone know how much I appreciated their business over the years.
