Ice rinks in malls

Recommended Posts

Is having ice-skating rinks in malls normal? Half the malls in Dallas have them. I was informed last night that not only was this strange and weird, it was also a very 80s thing to do.

I guess the fact that I took lessons in the Galleria makes me uncool. :(

Well,
going up where Winter was THE season and summer was time to get ready for NEXT Winter, we had places to skate if it was left alone for 30 mins;)
We watered down one of our fields to smooth out the area(wetland area) and the only thing to worry about was an occasional branch.
As far as MALLS, my sister used to do compete and do expos at malls all over the U.S. They are very common.

.....i remember when I lived in San Diego there was an ice rink at the mall......

When did you live in San Diego?
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright

92-95...

Well, there goes my clever plan to inform Jessica that it's weird and a very 80's thing to do... :P

Nope, not weird and not '80's. I started skating young, and competed for a while. My home rink was in a mall which was destroyed in the 94 quake (I had stopped skating by then).

It's really a good idea, inasmuch as it gives the kids/youths something to do while Mom spends time and money in the shopping center.

the west edmonton mall has one, and the oilers practice there occasionally... of course, they also have an amusement park, a mini-golf course (modeled after pebble beach i believe), a water park with wave pool, a trained dophin show, as well as canada's largest fleet of operational submarines.

I grew up in Mission Beach but I remember goin' to that rink while in Jr High in the early 80's. We used to think we were so cool when they'd let us stay after closing on Fri nights to have races and play hockey.

There's an ice rink in Gurnee Mills Mall in Illinois. Also, a lazer tag play area and a huge amount of video games, etc.

Here's a TMI moment for y'all: First time I ever got to second base was in this very same arcade/skating rink, after junior prom.

This also begs the question, why does Canada need an indoor skating rink? :P j/k...it helps if you can actually feel your extemities in the winter time while having fun... B|
