Houston, fattest city, again

Denver

Oops. After nabbing the coveted No. 2 spot in last year's survey, Denver falls short this year. Why? The number of junk-food joints is growing faster than the population, indicators of air quality are poorer, and the Mile-High City's score in our alcohol category is now among the most discouraging in our survey. Still, a city doesn't make the Top 10 without plenty of strengths: Denver residents have some of the highest exercise- and sports-participation rates in our survey, coupled with one of the lowest TV-watching rates. Water quality is the third-best in our survey, and the ratio of parkland, waterways and open space per person, at 98 residents per acre, is also excellent.

BRAGGING RIGHTS AND SOBERING FACTS:

-Despite a respectable overall score, Denver has far more bars and taverns than most cities surveyed - more than eight times more per capita than Mesa, Arizona.

-Denver ties with Dallas for the third-best EPA Watershed Rating among cities in our survey.

-People in greater Denver exercise on elliptical training machines more than residents of any other city in our survey, according to a study by American Sports Data, Inc.

-The region also leads the nation in fitness bicycling and mountain/rock climbing.

Colorado Springs

Last year's Fittest City wasn't able to sustain its lofty position. Urban problems have encroached on the eastern slope of the Rockies as Colorado Springs deals with longer commute times and higher fast-food and alcohol consumption. But the area still has some of the lowest TV viewership and the highest scores in sports participation. And it shows: By Centers for Disease Control and Prevention measures, Colorado is the skinniest state in the country. Of course, outdoor lovers tend to be attracted to such places, where climate, geography and attitude promote a culture of fitness.

BRAGGING RIGHTS AND SOBERING FACTS:

-The "typical American city" spotlighted in Eric Schlosser's eye-opening book Fast Food Nation has a typical number of fast-food joints, about one for every 4,100 residents.

-The EPA Watershed Rating for Colorado Springs is the second-highest in our survey, second only to Fort Worth.

-The temperature dips below 32 F in Colorado Springs an average of 161 days per year - the most of any city in our survey.

-Local residents go day-hiking in greater numbers than residents of any other city in our survey, according to a study by American Sports Data, Inc.

-Home gym exercise is also popular here, more so than any other city in our survey.

I think it has more to do with the fact that you can't spit and not hit someone working out in the area, I know my own workout regimine has double just from moving here. I do a lot more hiking, biking, climbing, snow sports, although I also do a lot less skydiving [:/]
