PhillyKev 0 #1 January 3, 2003 Yeah, we as skydivers assume certain risks when participating in our sport. But we all have an absolute guarantee of death at some point or another. As I get older and lose more friends this becomes even more apparent, and at times down right terrifying. This morning a friend of mine went in for a "routine procedure" to remove a small, localized malignant tumor. They encountered complications during surgery and after 12 hours on the table his body couldn't take the stress anymore and he died. Rob Miller just turned 31 a month ago. I appreciate it but not necessary. Just thought I'd remind you all that we're not immortal. Remember to live your life to the fullest and wring every damn drop of happiness and enjoyment out of it that you can because you never know when you won't have any more time left. CrazyIvan 0 #6 January 4, 2003 That one more proof that life is really weird, I met once an old guy (he used to be my mechanic) a WWII veteran, a bomber pilot, he got shot several times when flying over Germany, not a scratch, he was in Vietnam also, and he died taking a bath, he slipped and broke his back, ironic isn't it?__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. Sinkster 0 #9 January 4, 2003 I hope Socrates can offer you at least some small comfort in this time. There is wisdom in the passage below. It is worthy of contemplation no matter what you believe in. "God orders me to fulfil the philosopher's mission of searching into myself and other men, I were to desert my post through fear of death, or any other fear; that would indeed be strange, and I might justly be arraigned in court for denying the existence of the gods, if I disobeyed the oracle because I was afraid of death, fancying that I was wise when I was not wise." "For the fear of death is indeed the pretence of wisdom, and not real wisdom, being a pretence of knowing the unknown; and no one knows whether death, which men in their fear apprehend to be the greatest evil, may not be the greatest good." Blue skies brother...

wmw999 2,589 #11 January 4, 2003 I'm sorry to hear about that; it really sucks. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
Iflyme 0 #12 January 4, 2003 Sorry to hear about your friend ... that really sucks. Last night, a 23 old woman pushing her baby across the street in a stroller was hit by a big transport truck... she's critical, the kid is ok. I don't know the woman, ibut it'ss shit like that that scares me. You never know what tomorrow holds...
