mountainman 0 #1 January 6, 2003 Hi there those of you who are the underwater type. I have a question for you: While snorkeling in Mexico this past Saturday ( my first time ), right when I got in, I looked up too far and got a big gulp of water in the tube and ( I think ) down my throat. This was right over some shallow water with a lot of coral. Some people at work today was telling me that when you get cut by coral, it can cause some infection since it is a living thing. Here is the question: can this also cause infections in the throat if you swallow the water around it? My throat started hurted about 2 hours later or so and is feeling just as bad, if not worse. What do you think? How long will it last? Should I seek a Rx? Thank you for all your help. http://www.brandonandlaura.com
tigra 0 #2 January 7, 2003 I don't know, I've swallowed and inhaled salt water while snorkelling before and never got sick. And I think being cut by the coral is a little different than accidently inhaling sea water over the coral. If you are back in the US and your throat is still sore, use your best judgement as far as to go to the doc or not. Are your glands swollen? Are you running a fever or do you feel bad besides the sore throat? And for how long? Honestly, a sore throat can be caused by any number of things. And since you are a teacher, you are surrounded by germs every day! Strep can be serious and will require anti biotics to get over, but if its some kind of virus, it just needs to run its course and anti-biotics won't help. Anyway, hope you feel better soon, and if you don't, see a doctor! Warm salt water gargles are gross, but they do help! maura
KawiZX900 0 #3 January 7, 2003 I'm a scuba diver, and went surfin for the first time today and swallowed enought SoCal sweet water to last a lifetime thanx to the double breakers. Just burp, then go straight to the woods and wait for deer. then kill said deer. at this point you can worry about what kind of water the deer was drinking abd wether it is safe to eat or not. cut deer into manageble pieces and put in refrigerator, when guy steps out of your refrigerator and asks you to donate your organs, agree because in the scheme of things, well, you know. after all part of this post is stolen Monty Python material, if U could'nt tell Did I mention that I've got all the Monty Python episodes on DVD recently? well ya'll may be hearing about this from time to time. thats all for this episode of " A MAN'S SURF" i'm feelin soo point break right now, surfin, skydivin, no all i need is a mask. Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. BadDog 0 #5 January 7, 2003 You might take a look at the FAQ's on DAN's site at http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/faq/index.asp. I took a quick look and didn't spot anything exactly on point, but there were some promising looking titles.
davidp 0 #6 January 7, 2003 hi mountainman, I've done quite a bit of ocean diving also and have sucked down some serious salt water but it wasnt anything that a cold XX's couldnt fix. As far as the coral cut goes,, id expect some infection but i would think if you kept it clean your body will do the rest. just remember that if it turns green, this is not a good thing. mountainman 0 #7 January 7, 2003 Thank you all very much for your time to reply. I would be very interested in Chuck's opinion as well since he is an instructor and all. I think I may be just asking this to try to find out where this came from. I guess being in Mexico would lend me to pretty much get it from anywhere. Ah well. Also, I did not get any cuts from the coral. I was sure to stay above them and not get close. I was just refering to getting cut and infection and getting water and infection in my throat... I was hoping(?) there was a relation. Thanks again guys!! PS. Today I was researching doing some SCUBA training. There is place about 15 min from my house. Also, there is a place VERY close to Skydive Greene County by Xenia. Just rambling. I'm off to gargle and go to bed. http://www.brandonandlaura.com
tinfoil 0 #8 January 7, 2003 No idea about the coral, but going form my experience with nasty water and closed beaches, you can get infections from drinking water. Most of the time it’s unlikely, unless you choke badly on the water. “- - Sumo is the greatest of sports. It has power, grace, speed and cluture. Jasmin 0 #11 January 7, 2003 Personally I would be less worried with the coral and more worried witht the water quality. We all know to watch our drinking water, many of us don't think to check what's in the water we play in. How far offshore were you? Was there freshwater courses, farm effluent, sewerage effluent into the water anywhere near (or upcurrent) of where you were diving. The regs in Mexico aren't as strict as the states, and even then you have to be careful....xj "I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with the earth...but then I wouldn't recommend picking a fight with a car either, and that's having tried both." bobsled92 0 #12 January 7, 2003 Re: THE QUESTION YOU ASKED= Irritation in your throat from forceful coughing of sea water, you are safe.Reef rash/scar from cutting tissue, in your throat would be fairly unbareble & NO option to "walk it off". Surf at Laguna & Newport Beach gave me a chance to truely ingest all that they had to offer.p.s. still, this may have to end your ballet studies. _______________________________ If I could be a Super Hero, I chose to be: "GRANT-A-CLAUS". and work 365 days a Year. http://www.hangout.no/speednews/
