Rigger/liquor question

Recommended Posts

I was talking with a friend the other day and was told something that doesn't sound right so I thought I'd ask you guys.

A friend had packed his own reserve (is working on his rigger's license) and had a reserve ride so he rode his own reserve pack job down. Now...he repacks his reserve, gets his Rigger instructor to sign off on it (just signature nothing else), and the instructor says that a case of beer is required for just the signature.

I could see if the rigger had packed the job getting the beer but for just a signature? Is that right?

Thank goodness i never had to buy any alcohol for the riggers that supervise me. They put up with and mentored me just to be nice and make sure i learned. None of them did it to get alcohol out of me. After my reserve ride last week, i called the rigger that supervised that pack job and asked him what he wanted. I'll be buying him a bottle of the good stuff just for supervising and signing off what was (thank god) a good reserve repack.:)

I don't know about all that, but I figure riggers can have all the liquor they want. I hold the opinion that if a rigger has anything at all to do with a save then I buy him a fifth of whatever he wants. On the flip side, if a rigger has anything to do with me bouncing then I'm contractually obligated to haunt him for a period not to be less than one year or more than ten years;)

I never ask for alcohol after someone uses one of my reserve pack jobs. The tradition I was taught long ago was a case of beer for firsts, and a bottle of liquor to your Rigger after a reserve ride. If someone gives me a bottle, I graciously accept it and invite them to share it with me. If they don't give me anything, it's just fine with me.

In this particular case, putting myself in the shoes of the supervising Rigger, I would encourage the skydiver in question to buy a case of beer to celebrate the reserve ride (if it was a first) with the rest of the DZ. I would not hold it over his head before providing a signature. But that's just me . . .
