anyone interested in a 250k V16 Caddy?

i don't think a weight was mentioned, although they did say the car was totally aluminum... the article also mentioned that the back seat folded into a bed. good thing, with the price and the fuel mileage (or lack thereof) you'd have to live in the damn thing.

i know, i know, 500 or 600 horsepower would be cool, but 1000? how the hell would they keep that hooked up? you'd need traction control systems just to keep it from melting the tires off. i'd prefer something simpler. it's all smoke and mirrors anyway, i doubt they'd ever put that on the road. if they tried, someone would try to pass a law to stop it. environmentalists would hate it, auto clubs would hate it, the 55mph crowd would have a collective fit over it.

Bob Lutz at GM is on some serious drugs. The leadership at GM needs to grow up fast, or they're going to have to shut down more than Olds and discontinue the Carmaro/Firebird.

New to the fray: Chevy SSR Pickup ... it looks retro, but it can't carry a lot, and it isn't that fast. There's a Monte Carlo for the NASCAR freaks that think they're driving the same thing (too bad it's so ugly).

GM Auto engine line up: The "never-die" 3.8L push-rod V6... a 20+ year old design. The 5.7L V8 pushrod/hydrolic lifter engine in the Vette...also a revamped 20 year old design. These engines do not have the longevity of the old American ironblock.

GM build quality: Known to be the most inefficient in the world.

GM's only redeeming product: the trucks.

GM does not have the reputation to effectively market a $250,000 car (that's Maybach, Bentley, Rolls Royce territory). This concept will be "dumbed" down to a typical $40-50K design, with a 20 year old engine and body-panel gaps big enough to stick my thumb through.

Sorry folks. GM has not consistently followed through on any of its investments for the past 10 years. It doesn't compete in racing (NASCAR doesn't promote new technology), it has killed the Caddy SC racing team (come on, they thought they could be Audi in three years? Give me what they're smoking). They are a rudderless barge whose vision is costing its shareholders billions, jobs, and credibility. The Camaro was a technically superior execution over the Mustang, yet GM still could not compete, why?

GM infects everything it touches. Look at the build quality of Saabs over the past 5 years. Notice a difference for the worse...that's GM. Our friends in Europe can tell the rest of us what's happened to Opel, Fiat (who own Ferrari) and Vauxhall. GM nearly killed Lotus. Hummer, was a real truck. To expand the line-up, GM forces the H2, basically a Suburban on a factory lift-kit. The new Saturn Ion is the most disappointing American car in a decade (I didn't say this, Car & Driver did, Jan. 03 issue), never mind that Saturn has never operated in the black...ever.

GMs American competition has effectively evolved its line-up, offering efficient multi-valved engines, enhanced platforms, better build quality and a far more effective image on the world automotive stage (Ford Focus in WRC, Ford is actually turning Mazda around, enhanced Jaguar's image, Chrysler is owned by Diamler, the jury's still out). I'd like to hear from our Swedish friends about what Ford has done with Volvo, the image in the US is flourishing well.

I'm not saying other automakers don't have any warts. I am saying the GM inflicts its own wounds and Lutz at the helm, despite his credentials has thus far yielded nothing. 1000HP of nothing is still nothing.

I've got to agree with you on their cars, but GM's trucks are kick ass. I know my '98 Chevy has had a couple problems, but nothing major, just stuff that can be expected from a 5 year old truck with 75,000 miles on it.

It always surprises me that more companies do not use the Desmodromic valve system that Ducati uses. It's a great system I rekon.

I think that's an amazing system too, but the 4000 mile valve adjustment intervals on Ducatis are why I never owned one when I rode motorcycles.

I had to adjust the valves on my '73 VW SuperBeetle (1302) every 3000 miles or sometimes sooner (once you know what to listen for, you can hear them turn slightly out of adjustment). Car maintance is a way of life, anyone who doesn't agree either A)gets a new car every couple years or B)has one crappily running car.B|

The only thing I do to my Acura every 3000 miles is change the oil. I take of the major service intervals when recommended, but I find that even then, it's way overcompensating. The variable-valve timing in my car doesn't require adjustment every 4K (thank goodness). ;)
