skr 1 #1 January 11, 2003 Just made a pass through rec.skydiving (I've got to get a life :-) :-) and found this from Tom B: Subject: Time to change your shorts http://lightning.pwr.eng.osaka-u.ac.jp/lrg/temp/plane.html Ever heard God snap his fingers? jessd 0 #3 January 11, 2003 That is so scary. One flight that I was on there was a storm way off in the distance - it was freaky. I would freak if the plane actually got struck "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away..." phatcat 0 #5 January 11, 2003 Not TOO uncommon, really. Electricity just conducts through the skin (usually). I just read an article in FLYING about a small 4 place single that got hit in a test flight. It had a composite skin, i.e. doesn't conduct electricity, but it survived practicaly unscathed, except for some small burn marks. Pretty cool pics though! RevJim 0 #8 January 11, 2003 QuoteNo ground. no sweat! Electricity 101! Normally I would agree with you there, but in todays fly by wire systems, that would freak me out! Though there is no true ground on the plane while it's flying, there had to have been some serious vlotage spikes and/or fluctuations in the on board electronics. I mean, cmon, these are the planes you can't use a cell phone on!It's your life, live it! AndyMan 7 #11 January 11, 2003 Then why won't they let me use my cellphone during taxi? Seriously, you want to remember what a bit of Electro-Magnetic Interference will do to that planes electronics. It probably won't fry them, but it might cause them to power-cycle, reboot, etc. It might be a bad thing if the auto-pilot suddenly turned off, or landing gear that needed to be down suddenly went up. Weird things happen around large amounts of EMI. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
