And I have to say, the eye candy is amazing!

In regards to your eq question, there are significant shakers somewhere in the state on average about 1 every 10 years. By significant, I mean something which damages things. Most of our quakes are wee small ones, and rarely are felt.

Here's the USGS's eq website for CA:

http://www.scecdc.scec.org/recenteqs/

You can see that there are lots of wee tiny boxes, and those are generally not even felt. The larger boxes are just about 3-4, and may have been felt, but not usually (unless you were right near the epicenter).

Yes, we are in an active fault area. Yes we have shakes. But having been through some major ones, both here and in No CA, I can say it's not too bad. Far better, imho, than a tornado, and far less frequent (the damaging ones, at least!). Of course, they scare the holy crud outta me, but running in circles, screaming "stop" usually helps! LOL!!

Let me know if you need any more info - pm me and I'll call you back!

Michele

Hey, hon!

I'll give you a call tomorrow night if you'll be around. Right now with my cold, I sound like Kermit the Frog and can't talk too long. :D

Eye candy - California just got bumped up in the list.

Thanks for that link to the earthquake site. It's really cool! At what magnitude earthquake are most felt? Some are on there as 1.4 others larger....

I love Texas. I like a lot of different parts of Texas for different reasons too. If you want, PM me or post here what kind of job you're looking for, what sort of climate you're looking for and what you want in a DZ and I can help you find an area in Texas that you'd like.

Job - I'd like to move into a business analyst position although I'm currently a web specialist (web developer that does business analyst work at times).

Climate - Warm. LOL If I'm going to leave Wisconsin, I'd like snow to be a rarity.

DZ - friendly, fun, people who are willing to jump with you and help teach you no matter what your jump numbers are

Job: That's damn near any city in Texas, but the Dallas area (telecom corridor) would probably be your best bet.

Climate: Pretty warm, gets cooler in the winters (down around 30F), but nothing crazy and it rarely snows. If it does snow, its an 1/2 of an inch and it doesn't stick.

DZ: That sounds a lot like Skydive Aggieland, but that's not by Dallas. In that area you're best bet would be Skydive Dallas, they're fun and friendly, but also a larger DZ so you can get lost if you're not careful.

Hi, Cora!

Tomorrow will be fine. So far. This is subject to change without notice, however!

As to the magnitude most people feel, some don't feel 4's under their feet, while some feel 3.5's if they're near the epicenter (by near I mean within 2 miles). It also depends on the depth of the quake - that which is shallower will be felt over a larger area, and vice versa.

4's usually feel like a train going by. 5's will get your attention. 6's are without doubt not missed by most, and on from there. 1's, 2's and low 3's are generally not felt, and if felt, not identified as a quake, but like a big truck passing on the street. I was sitting at my desk on a rollerchair when there was a 4.2 about 10 miles N/E from me...the chair lifted, and slid about an inch. That was it. I wasn't even sure it was a quake 'til I checked the site. I thought it might have been one of the kitties whacking against the chair. The cats ignored the whole thing. LOL!

Hi Cora,

You don't say what your skills are, do you have a wide choice where you work? How easy is it for you to relocate? What are your interests (outside of work & skydiving)?

I'll leave the real estate prices, job opportunities etc... to people who currently live in the area they recommend, but all other things being even somewhere close to equal, my vote would be Arizona. NOT (merely) for Eloy / Coolidge, but for the place itself.

Whatever else Arizona is, it isn't subtle. The variety of climate, the light, the low humidity and the people there all seem to come together somehow. I've sent a total of 3 months there in the past few years, the first time was a skydiving holiday with a little touring thrown in. Subsequent visits were touring & camping with a little skydiving thrown in(!) and I've barely begun to scratch the surface of the place.

Admittely, in June/July Montana would look significantly attractive. Actually Alaska would look attractive (!) but if you can accept 2 months of moving from air conditioned house to air conditioned car to air conditioned workplace/mall/shop then for my money the remaining 10 months would more than compensate. Where else can you go from being in shorts beside the pool in the Valley of the Sun, drive off and be skiing in show low in 2-3 hours in Show Low? Camping in 2 feet of snow on te North Rim to punching the air conditioner in the car 90 minutes later at Navajo ridge? Oh yeah... With a piece of ABSOLUTELY STUNNING scenery thrown in.

OK, I'm into the whole "outward Bound" thing, once went camping at the North Rim with my 5 year old in February (NOT recommended unless pi$$sing off park rangers is also a hobby - but the camping itself went fine). If getting close to nature's your thing also then Az, with some 80%+ of the state being public land you're spoilt for choice.

One small point, between Diamondbacks, Black Light Scorpions etc... etc... PLEASE remember that this is called the "Wild West", not the "Slightly Inconvenient West":S.

Keep us posted, if you do move to Az I'll be jealous as hell:D.

Regards,

Mike.

Hey, Mike!

Programming skills - XML, ASP, VBScript, JavaScript, HTML, SQL, etc. Plus, I've written user manuals, have analyzed requirements and designed web based programs as a result of my discoveries.

It's very easy for me to relocate. Pack up my 1 bedroom apartment and on my way. Interests are motorcycles, nature, outdoors, paintball, darts, swimming...fun stuff.

Snakes, scorpions, etc. don't bother me. I've raised quite a few snakes (King snakes, boas, pythons, rattlesnakes, etc.) in my time. :)
I'll definitely keep ya'll posted as things develop. As I said, we just found out so I have some time but am starting the research process early. I prefer to have a job to go to and not be "in between" jobs.

>What about Colorado?? You'd have mountains, skiing,
> snowboarding . . .

So does San Diego - I'm about 90 minutes from some pretty good skiing. Plus we have the desert, which is cool.

>there are dropzones there (colorado) as well.

Only problem there is the high ground elevation - limits the altitude you can get.
