AggieDave 6 #26 January 13, 2003 Well, the Marines used to have mounted divisions. That is why we have the boots and spus at A&M in the first place, our tradition as a military school since 1876. In fact we have the last commission ROTC mounted unit in the nation! Parson's Mounted Calvary, which is a special unit in the Corps of Cadets that maintains a calvary unit, complete with horse drawn cannon and crew (a 1903 field piece). That is the cannon used at the Texas Aggie Football home games (and some away games), fired when we score. All in all, its pretty fucking awsome. Even though only a handful of seniors (seniors are the only ones with *the* boots) are apart of Parson's, we all still wear the boots and spurs as part of our daily uniform. Its actually very impressive to hear those heavy boots walking, they have taps on the heal and toe (no, not tap dancing taps, regular taps), so that along with the spurs and the spur chains, it makes a very very distinct and fairly intimidating sound. This school fucking rocks! --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Zenister 0 #27 January 13, 2003 so does A&M have a fencing program? do they make thier cadets learn to use the swords they carry? West Point stopped doing it (ggggrrrr) and i caused quite a bit of trouble at Ft. Hood once when i showed one of the 1st Cavs commanders that the parade team really shouldnt be wearing weapons that they had no idea how to use, much less salute correctly with i love sabres! thats cool though (the spurs) i think the modern military is throwing away a number of traditions that they really shouldnt.. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. AggieDave 6 #28 January 13, 2003 We have a fencing team, a fencing club and fencing classes, all on the civilian side. Remember, Texas A&M has 45,000 students, the Corps of Cadets has 2,000 members... As for your average Cadets? Some know, some don't. I was one of the few that could some fancy drill with my sabre. I did that and even did some hard-core fancy drill with a Springfield 1903, actually. It'd always seem to mess up the OOD when we marched into chow and I was the OD for my unit, since I would do some a few extra "movements" while presenting arms and marching my unit to the chow hall. No one ever told me to stop, but I did get a couple double takes. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Zenister 0 #29 January 13, 2003 there was a time when you could ID the particular unit by the salute. Mostly because the fencing instructors often had their own variants and tended to stay with a particular unit, but that was quite some time ago...i used to know 8 different 'official' US Army salutes and actually 'fixed' the Cavs when i saw them practicing one day..of course i had to 'prove' i knew what i was talking about..silly Cpt didnt want to listen to a godless contractor.. i found it really funny that not one of the people carrying a sword had ever had any real training with it...sad just sad..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. bbb2003 0 #35 January 13, 2003 I just want to say that as a female at Texas A&M, the seniors in their boots and spurs is the most sexy thing ever. Every girl on campus will turn her head when you hear one walking near. The girls that date alot of corps guys even have the nickname of "Boot chasers!" It's a blast... I also LOVE this school! -Things that make you go hmmm
