Really though, RAM drives aren't especially fast. It is usually more efficient to allow your operating system to cache the data in memory by itself.

Actually they're especially fast if they don't have to write that RAM out to swap. Of course if the memory allocated to the RAM drive forces other critical apps to either page or swap (there is a difference) then the benefits might be lost.

I dont know about you, but my raw tandem vids are 1.5gb+. My system chews up an additional couple gigs for preview files, transitions, etc.

So unless you are working with <3 minute video files, a ramdisk wont do you much good.

and if you get a power drop, you are gonna lose all your work (including your raw footage). NOT cool.

nice try tho'

buy a dual processor Mac. problem solved.

Although for some that's a hell of a good idea, it's not for most. I want, and need interoperability. I'm running Premier 6.0, Photoshop 7.0, and AutoCAD 2002 on a friggin PII400. I'm building a Dual 2Gig P4 system. Why? Because I have Windows 2000 applications, and I'm not plunking down a frigging brand new rigs worth of cash for the mac version of the programs, aside from the cost of the Mac!

See, PC is nt so bad, for the majority of the general public.

Will this new dual 2GHz P4 system enable you to enjoy pickled eggs and turkey gizzards with greater ease? :P

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

most of the better 'ram drives' offer a writeback mirror that runs as a background thread as a bit of protection.

I'm building a Dual 2Gig P4 system.

The new P5's that just came out have hyper-threading. Meaning, each processor is able to process two core threads simultaneously. Basically gives you the advantage of a multi processor on a single chip. Processor's are so overspeed these days compared to the other bottlenecks that you probably would never peg it at 100% utilization either, even running AutoCad.

Holry Schmidt!

I do believe the P5 is gonna be a bit out of my pricerange though. I'd like to finish building this system, and still be able to jump.

Really, I want to see how much I gotta throw at those 2 P4s, 3 gigs of RAM, and dual SCSI 120 gig HDDs to peg the meter.

This is gonna be fuuuuuun!
