SpeedRacer 1 #1 January 15, 2003 The 80's thread inspired me to print this thing my brother emailed me: QuoteWhen I was a kid adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But... I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so f*ckin' easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a godd@mned Utopia! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet--we wanted to know something, we had to go to the godd@mned library and look it up ourselves! And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter--with a pen!--and then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the f*ckin' mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! And there were no MP3s or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to go to the godd@mned record store and shoplift it yourself! Or we had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and fuck it all up! You want to hear about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! It was either that or jackoff to the lingerie section of the JC Penney catalog! Those were your options! We didn't have fancy shit like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was it could be your boss, your mom, a collections agent, your drug dealer, you didn't know!!! You just had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! And we didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation videogames with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass! Your guy was a little square! You had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept getting harder and faster until you died! Just like LIFE! When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front of you, you were screwed! And sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 20 channels and there was no onscreen menu! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning... ...D'ya hear what the f*ck I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK, you spoiled little b@stards! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled, I swear to God! You guys wouldn't last five minutes back in 1984! Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

dterrick 0 #6 January 15, 2003 Eee-yuppp! I remember when "Superchannel" was first broadcast and the bootleg descrambler was a 2" x 2" circuit board with about 3 electronic pieces on it. They had this new show called "MTV" or something that was cool (anyone remember the first video they played?) Our first VCR (about a grand) had a remote with a 12 foot cord and tapes were about 10 bucks a piece. I still own the very first sony Walkman with - wait for it - an FM tuner option! 4 AA batteries played about 3 casettes. Remember casettes? I actually played "Pong" Dave (I'm not THAT old... but I DO refuse to grow up) Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

Push 0 #8 January 15, 2003 Imagine what you'll be telling your kids: We actually had to jump out of a @#%&* airplane to skydive! None of that $#%# teleporter #!$%. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
kallend 2,146 #9 January 15, 2003 You lucky bastard. I Did have to walk to school in all weather, and listen to awful pre-Beatles music on a tube radio, and write long essays with pens that had to be dipped in inkwells, and play rugby every week for 5 years, and learn to drive on a stick-shift, and date girls when chastity was still in fashion (that was the worst)...... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
dterrick 0 #10 January 15, 2003 Baah! I have a LOVELY collection of "Valve wireless sets" and there's something to be said about listening to WWII era Big Band or Voice of America while basking in the crackle and glow of the Old Tech (same goes for listening to a baseball game). Too, there is awful "post-Beatles" music ... but in fairness it'd be awfully hard to choreograph freefly to "Love me do". ..I AM working on a Dave Brubeck piece, tho. skybytch 273 #11 January 15, 2003 QuoteRemember casettes? I remember 8 tracks. Cassettes were just so damn cool cuz they didn't switch tracks in the middle of a freakin' song. QuoteI actually played "Pong" Lucky stiff. My parents wouldn't buy one; I had to play it on the demo unit at Sears. They didn't refuse to buy it because it was expensive, but cuz they had some primal fear of having the game permanently burned into the TV screen. I've never quite gotten over or forgiven them for forcing me to grow up so deprived.
12bhi 0 #12 January 15, 2003 I'll still take my childhood compared to what kids have to deal with today.Yeah it may seem they've got it much easier than we did,but I never had to worry about biological weapons, buildings crashing down on me,or one of my not so chemically balanced classmates using me for target practice.
