narcimund 0 #1 January 15, 2003 It turns out there's no efficient way back from the Domincan Republic, so I end up with a 24 hour layover in NYC next month. I've never been there before and I gather it's a great place to spend a week or two. Fantastic museums and shows, tourism magnets everywhere, and food. FOOD! Three and four-star restaurants and real deli sandwiches and bagels. BAGELS! And pizza. The best! I only have a little less than a day to play however. So what would you do? What's the one best meal in NYC? What's the one neighborhood to wander? What's the one best museum? First Class Citizen Twice Over

cgross 1 #4 January 15, 2003 So much to do, I can't even tell you one thing. the Met is the museum to go to.... Food? I can't help you. Neighborhood... Some advise, if while on a subway the Street # start getting up around 100, 110, 120... TURN around. That isn't the neighborhood you were looking for. jfields 0 #5 January 15, 2003 QuoteWhat's the one best museum? Depends on your tastes. It could be something like the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), or just cruising through private galleries. QuoteWhat's the one best meal in NYC? I'd have to say to go deli. You can get great cuisine of different ethnic groups there, but you can other places as well. So find a really good deli and just savor the New York experience. I'm not a local, so I can't make any great suggestions from an educated perspective. I've been to two different (Stage & Carnegie?) and they were both really good. Have fun!
CrazyIvan 0 #6 January 15, 2003 Well my friend, 24 hours won't be enough, so I suggest, you get your butt to Times Square (at night if possible), walk down Broadway, check all the theaters, all the way down to the Lincoln Center, food? there are lots of places. You can get on the Circle Line, which is a tour around Manhattan (there are 2 the HALF circle and FULL circle) is a boat that goes around the Hudson River, the whole tour is between 1 to 2 hours depending on your selection, next to the Circle Line pier is the INTREPID, an Aircraft carrier museum, but the best part of NY is the Lincoln Tunnel TO NEW JERSEY!!! hehehehe Let me know what you want to see or go, I can give you some tips. __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. AggieDave 6 #8 January 15, 2003 Go to Hello Deli, its the one that's always on the Late Show with Letterman. If anything, I'd think it would be a good laugh...but then again, I'm weird. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." narcimund 0 #9 January 15, 2003 QuoteDepends on your tastes. It could be something like the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), or just cruising through private galleries. The galleries it is then! The only MA museum that didn't COMPLETELY waste my time was in SF. The only reason it had any value to me at all was because they accidently booked a fascinating NON-modern-art show of photographic portraits. Modern art can bite my credulous ass. jessd 0 #10 January 15, 2003 I would suggest going to Times Square. I've only been to NYC a few times - usually only for a day or two. I always have fun walking around Times Square. The last time I was there I had lunch at the ESPN sports bar (I think that's what it was called). But, the cool thing about it was that there were TV's in all the stalls in the bathroom. But, there are so many things to do there. Try to see a play on Broadway - that's always fun. "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away..." CrazyIvan 0 #11 January 15, 2003 Hey, one place you MUST visit is THE BREWERY, is nearby Times Square, a WHOLE BUILDING just for beer, they brew it right on the premises, you can eat there too. __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. I actually refuse to go to any restaurant with televisions so I think I'll skip this particular place. But thanks for the suggestion. Televisions bring me zero pleasure. I seriously don't know why anybody has one. First Class Citizen Twice Over
jessd 0 #14 January 15, 2003 I just thought that it was a neat place. But, there are so many things to do in NYC. I would strongly suggest trying to see a play - if you like that kind of stuff. Blue2003 0 #17 January 15, 2003 There is so much to do and luckily. NYC is open 24 hours a day. I live in NJ so ignore all those bashing Jersey Jokes. Stay awake all 24 hours, circle line might be alittle cold next month but a good idea. My kids go to NY to the Museums every two weeks. Eating, Cafe 1,2,3 is by Broadway definately try to see a show. Go to Times Square and go to TKTS that's where they sell tickets off price for that nights performance. If you can get to RENT try. If I think of anything else I'll let you know. PS Sky's the Limit is Open in winter maybe a day of jumping in Jersey Winter. Only 50 miles from NYC. Perhaps we can get a group together. Stay in touch."Cloudy Skies look different through skydivers eyes. Is that a hole in the clouds I see?" Let's get driving! pilotdave 0 #18 January 15, 2003 I just spent 4 days there. Both of my brothers live in Manhattan. We had 2 meals that cost around $150 for the 3 of us. Such good food though (and I didn't have to pay a dime my whole time there). The closest thing to a museum I went to was the wax museum near times square. Price to get in was $25 which is pretty insane, but it was amazing. Hundreds of wax people that look amazingly real. I'm not sure if it would be worth $25 to you, but I enjoyed it. One of my brothers works in times square (he's in the building with the gigantic curved TV on the corner and ESPN sportszone on the other size) so he was able to show me around that area. A number of TV shows are filmed around there. Dunno if you're interested, but when they aren't filming you can walk right up to the window and look in at the sets (such as the today show's set). One piece of advice. Take cabs! I would never be able to figure out the subway in just one day. It's nuts! Cabs are fairly cheap. Dave
flyhi 24 #19 January 15, 2003 With your main squeeze? Go to the Savoy, it's downtown but lot's of atmosphere. Want Pizza? Johnny's on Bleeker in the Village; real wood fired 'za. Want modern bar/pub food? Wall Street Kitchen. Want history? McSorley's Pub on 7th, I believe. Literally about 150 years old. Want a good restaurant overlooking the Hudson? Chelsea Brewing Co. You all may laugh, but if you were there, you'd love it. Personal favorite? Heartland Brewery on Union Square. Great food, good beer, lots of traffic. Museums? You gotta see the Guggenheim, even if you just walk past it. Just ask anyone where the Gug' (Goog) is. The building itself is art. Even if you don't like whatever show they are having, your on Museum Avenue (Central Park East). Enjoy and everyone is right, a day isn't enough!Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.
narcimund 0 #20 January 15, 2003 Quote With your main squeeze? Nope, this is a squeezeless vacation. Imagine that! After four years together day and night, we're going to try to practice independence again, if only for 2 weeks. Fantastic ideas. From you and everyone. I'm overwhelmed by the options. I'm clear on the idea that a day isn't enough, but I'll just consider it an amuse bouche and save my appetite for another trip. Many newer art galleries and eateries on every block (as is the fashion in THE city)
