PLFXpert 0 #1 January 16, 2003 OK, I normally do my best not to discuss anything serious or news-related in the forumns but this just, I shouldn't say surprises me, but more like pisses me off. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30102 It was on the Today show this morning. They shaved this poor little girl's head and that is the least of what they did to her to fake this. The poor child. It doesn't surprise me that someone would think of this, but I really dont' understand it and it makes me so sad for the poor little girl.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. jessd 0 #6 January 16, 2003 The child's mother probably has some mental issues. I took a few psych classes in undergrad. Their is a mental illness call Munchausens by proxy (I know I didn't spell it right at all). In a nutshell people basically make others believe that a loved one is very sick (usually their child). Often times the parent with the disorder takes some pretty extreme measures and puts the child through absolute torture. When I get home I will dig up one of my old papers because I researched one particular case where the child went through numerous surgical procedures and everything. It's very disturbing that things like this even exist. (BTW I am not claiming to be any sort of expert on this - I just found psych to be very fascinating) "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away..." PLFXpert 0 #7 January 16, 2003 I think you may be right, Jess, b/c the husband (who is also being accused but claims, and for some weird reason I believe him, that he didn't know his wife was faking it) said he would stand by his wife b/c after talking to the doctors/couselors, he learned some disease caused her to behave that way. I just dont' know. I mean, I KNOW depression is a real disease that most people don't recognize, so it seems that other diseases such as this are possible, but still a bit hard to believe sometimes.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. jessd 0 #8 January 16, 2003 Oh it is definitly a real disease. The fascinating (not is a good way) about is that it usually is the mother who sufferes from it and usually their spouse or other family really don't know. I mean - sometimes they even have the doctor's fooled because the sufferer of the disease knows what to do in order to make their child's symptoms appear to be like that of a real disease - could be done with medicine etc... I will look at my old book and research paper when I get home. It is so sad though because often times the child does suffer long-term physical (not to mention mental) damage from such a trying ordeal. Pammi 0 #9 January 16, 2003 QuoteMunchausens by proxy I've read about that as well. It's basically what was going on with that girl on Sixth Sense that was throwing up all the time if anyone's seen it, right Jessd? I'm sorry, but I don't care what's wrong with this woman, she deserves some severe punishment. Pammi

jessd 0 #11 January 16, 2003 Exactly. I was trying to think of that but couldn't think of the name of the movie that it was in. The mother basically kept feeding her daughter ammonia (or something) with her food. The daughter knew and videotaped it. In essence the mother was slowly killing her daughter. In a lot of cases it is a cry for help for these parents. It's so weird, but there are so many different things that these people do to imitate symptoms of other diseases. It just boggles the mind... I also agree that she deserves punishment but she also needs some mental help as well. "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away..." PLFXpert 0 #13 January 16, 2003 Exactly...apparently she knew EXACTLY what to do to make it look real b/c she had worked in medicine before and knew where to put a "chemo" bandaid, etc. I wish I could understand a bit more. I'd need to learn more about the disease, b/c sometimes, you still know right from wrong and it's just a matter of willpower. Other times, the person may really not have a clue that what they're doing is bad for them or their child. Either way, it's SO DIFFICULT to sympathize with the mother in this case. Maybe you could enlighten me more on the disease, Jess, as far as, did she still know what she was doing was wrong? I always try to understand both sides of a situation, but inevitably, my weakness is when children or animlas are abused. In either of these two cases, it becomes more difficult for me to sympathize with the offender. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

In either of these two cases, it becomes more difficult for me to sympathize with the offender. I agree with you 100%. I think in some cases they do know to an extent that what they are doing is wrong. It really is a fascinating illness. I was so shocked when I first learned about it. It is very disturbing especially because the victims tend to be young children. There are many books that are devoted entirely to this subject - I'll look at me references for my paper that I did (hopefully I can find it) and et you know what some of them are if you are interested in reading more about it.
