My favourite HST quote from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the one about journalism...(from memory as I'm at work)

Journalism is not a profession. It's catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits....etc,etc.

Remember it when reading reporting on skydiving accidents.

Murray (Who is old enough to have read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when it was serialized in Rolling Stone magazine, before the book was released.)

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold......

Yep, you've got me beat in the age department if you read it in Rolling Stone. I haven't been around quite that long.

Thought of another one here, and I'm gonna have to warn on going off memory, too, but at least it's fairly freshy memory.------We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high power blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a fifth of gin, a fifth of rum, a pint of ether, and a whole multi-colored universe of uppers and downers. Not that we needed all that, but when you get a serious drug collection going the tendency is to go overboard.

"The edge ... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who know where it is are those that have gone over"

edited to add that Consolidated Riggings web site opens with that same quote
You can get a lot more done with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.

Wow Fear and Loathign in LV. I could qote from that all day long, what a fun book. I started reading Duke in High School and hadent really picked anythign new up until just reciently, the Rum Diary and it was a great book, tame tame in comparision to Fear, but a story as aposed to political rants.

Long live HST.

I AM an old bastard! ;)

My other favourite quote is...

"I hate to recommend alcohol, drugs and violence to anybody else, but they've always worked for me." ... Don't know where that one came from exactly.

The movie, "Where the Buffalo Roam" starring Bill Murray has some good moments but overall isn't great. I love the opening where Murray, as HST, is walking back and forth in his cabin in Colorado, in front of a mannequin wearing a Nixon mask, drinking and muttering to himself while the "mojo wire" beeps incessantly in the background (the mojo wire was a primitive precursor of a fax machine) as the editors at Rolling Stone are waiting for copy and the deadline is already past. His dobermans pad back and forth beside him. Suddenly he drops to one knee and shouts "Down Rocko she's mine!!" as he pulls out a very large handgun and blasts the mojo wire several times.

It's worth renting if you can find it in a video store if you've read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and On the Campaign Trail.

I really should get some work done but HST is such a long-time favourite..

I read Fear and Loathing and also Hells Angels. You can't compare Duke to anyone else.

Interesting movie was Fear and Loating with Johnny Depp playing Hunter. Follows the book very closely and is very very weird- If you're not a HST fan you'll turn it off in about 15 minutes- If you ARE a fan you won't even take a piss break. Find it at your local video store and watch it! Be careful if you decide to pump yourself full of anything more potent than a few pints of rum.

I kind of like Where the Buffalow Roam. I really like Terry Gillioms Fear and Loathig in LV. Every time I watch it I want to go take a bunch of acid - however thoes years are way behind me. Johnny Depp mkes an awsome HST. I've read a few things about turnign The Rum Diaries into a flick with Depp reprising his role as duke.

My favorite of the books is Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972. The film, Where the Buffalo Roam, is still one of my all time favorites. Bill Murray just got it RIGHT.

Too bad HST has fried his brain and has nothing coherent left to say. His was a beautiful mind....

This is the main advantage of ether: it makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel... total loss of all basic motor skills: blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue- severance of all connection between the body and the brain. Which is interesting because you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can't control it.
