It's 100% personal opinion. I use fluxbox. It doesn't have all of the features of KDE or GNOME, but after spending a little bit of time getting it set up I can work far more efficiently with it.

I use windowmaker with gtk and some other gnome libs. Its all custom how i want it. I don't need everything associated with a full desktop environment. I mostly use the command line anyways. Here is a screen shot.

I currently have just plain WindowMaker (www.windowmaker.org).
It's rather crude and minimalistic but customisable enough for me and efficient. I really like the way its virtual screens work.
I used to run IceWM in the days of yore and I think
I liked it too.

I used to use plain X11 with a minimal window manager (much of this before any of these newer complete environments were developed). When CDE, Gnome, and KDE first started appearing, they just weren't good enough, nor did we have the cheap CPU and RAM to make them work well, so I stuck with straight X11+wm for a long time.
KDE3 was what changed my mind. It's a really well thought out environment that I enjoy using a lot, and I finally have enough CPU and memory to make it all run smoothly.
For anyone who judged KDE in the past by 2.0 and who hasn't looked at 3.0, give it a try. You might be surprised as I was.
