Tax disc for a car over in the UK is about 160 USD,

Tax on our gas makes it 4 times as expensive as US gasoline. (about a dollar a litre)

You must have insurance and roadworthiness test on the vehicle, about 50 usd for the test, insurance depends on whether its a banger or a ferrari...:S

Since the cheapo plates initiative was voted in (Tim Eyman, you're a god!), I'm paying $45 to renew.

I pay around 400$ per year- it includes mandatory insurance, car registration renewal and a small amount for using the roads (insurance is the most expensive part). But my car is in the cheapest insurance class according to engine size/power, so I imagine some people are paying three times as much every year.
Oh, and just yesterday I made a 'donation' to the people who take care of parking problems in our city- you know, the guys with the f%ing tow trucks...:S

I wish I only paid $80. Last year I paid excise tax ($230) and car insurance ($980). Not sure what the price will be this year but I do know that I will need to renew my registration this year. I don't even know what that costs - maybe $30 or so.

Oh don't get me started -

$600 this year to register the car in Minn. (based on car value - I much prefer the $80/year flat rate in Wi.)
We ain't gonna discuss insurance.

I thought Jesse The Brain fixed it so people would stop registering there cars over the border? Guess not.

Driver's license is like $12 every four years.

I drive a 19 year old pile of crap so registration alone isn't bad; about $45 on the "off smog" years. I live in California so every other year I have to get a smog check to renew the registration. That runs around $50 if it passes. Can get insanely expensive if any of the smog equipment is broken; repairs have to be made before they'll pass it - even if it passes the "sniff" test before the repairs are made, it must also pass a "visual" inspection.

Shopping new insurance right now. Because my car is so old and such a pile I only carry PL&PD and uninsured motorist. I'm looking at two quotes - one is $213 for six months (that's on my parent's policy figuring four cars and their address), the other is $240 for six months (that's for just my car at my address).

(30$ for personlized plate bonus if you can figure out what is says)

Do I get $30 to get my own personalized plates? I'll guess it's "n2skdvn"
What do I win?!

BTW - do you pay that extra $30 every year? Or just to get them in the first place. Here, it's $30 (or $35 maybe?) every year - which seems pretty stupid to me - you're not getting new plates every year.
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

Actually it's £160 per year, NacMAc, youre not buying your tax discs from the photocopy place again are you?;)

There is a small loophole to the road tax in the uK, cars manufactured prior to 1/1/1973 are classed as "Historic", the tax for them is free (but you've still gotta go and get the disc).

Diesel fuel is about the same, about $1 per liter, BUT... You can make your own from used vegetable oil for about $0.20 per litre, and even after you've paid UK tax it's still only $0.48 per litre

Yeah... The newer the vehicle, the more stringent the roadworthyness test (mainly 'cos the more systems & things fitted to the vehicle, the more there is to test).

I've got 2 landrovers (the original SUV). The newer one costs me about £250 PA to keep on the road, the older one (pre 1974) costs me £105 PA to keep on the road.

Car registration is about $60; driver's license is $40 every 4 years (I think -- it's been 3 years). Insurance before I was carrying my son was about $70/month for liability only. Obviously it got a little more expensive with a teenaged boy on it :(

Actually about 2.5 times as expensive. We're paying about $1.65 a gallon here. Good article in Home Power this month about how to make biodiesel for 54 cents a gallon (12 cents a liter.)

When I was in South Dakota it was around $25 to regester my 78 Jeep and another 25 a month for insurance. Here in England I pay about $400 a year for my three cars (Rover, VW GTI and an old Mini), for road tax, another $50 a pop for MOT and about 1500 a year in insurance.

Brace yourselves:

My Bike insurance is £1300 a year for a VFR800 = US$2015. Tax = £80 a year. Worth it to me as it goes very very fast and is my only mode of transport (which at this time of year is a little chily).

My brothers insurance on his Honda S2000 parked on the street in London is £3000 (US$4650) a year but he is fucking loaded.
