What's the best time to book your flight?

Recommended Posts

What's the best time to book a flight? I've learned I think that booking a flight months in advance isn't necessarily the best bargin, so when do you book your flight to get the best deal? I'm looking to fly over the easter holiday.

I usually try to book my flights at least a month in advance. Sometimes you do run the risk or missing a good deal, but, everytime I booked a flight within just a few weeks I paid more.

For Holidays you are generally best booking in advance - at least for domestic travel. For other dates it depends - if that flight that week doesn't sell well there will usually be last minute deals. If the flight is mostly sold you will pay a fortune.

I'd say it depends on how set you are on traveling, I've gotten outrageously low prices on tickets bought a day in advance around Christmas, but if you really want to be somewhere this probably isn't the best idea. I think I bought my ticket for Eloy over a month in advance but my friend bought his a little closer to the travel date, and we paid the same price. Ditto the Orbitz or Travelocity ideas, although sometimes checking with a travel agent can offer a nice surprise.;)

Book as early as possible, then keep an eye on the rates. Find the best rates with travelocity or expedia, whatever, then book directly with the airline. Keep an eye on the rate for that flight, and if it goes down, call the airline. In almost all cases they will refund the difference, or at least give you a credit.

Trying to predict the fluctuation in airline rates is akin to trying to time the market.

My experience: Best domestic rates, outside of sales, are 4 weeks in advance. Best International are 6-8 weeks in advance. If you don't have a specific time-frame, subscribe to airline special-fare mailings (Orbitz is pretty good) and you will get periodic email for good rates.

How do most of you go about getting your ticket. Do you use a travel agent or a discount internet site like cheap tickets, orbitz, expedia or priceline.

I dont' like priceline, you can't pick your times easily. I use each airlines site, expedia, orbitz and side step usually I find the best deal on expedia or the airlines web site.

I usually get my tickets from Expedia. I've never had any problems with them and I have usually gotten them for reasonable prices.
