akaGQ 0 #1 January 23, 2003 I was browsing thru the paper this morning while I was drinking my coffee at work and stumbled upon an article that was talking about the issues of global warming over the past year. I read on further and noticed that people are still speaking of the end of the world and so on and so forth. As cold as its been Id say the polar ice caps have begun to melt. LOL But when I turned on my TV this evening even the Daily Show on comedy central was talking about it. I just found a bit of irony in the whole global warming issue when we are all experiencing such low temps. This isnt really anything important I just found it to be somewhat humerous.- GQ ... it was the love of the air and sky and flying, the lure of adventure, the appreciation of beauty ... -Charles Lindberg

Think of the outcome, year-round jumping without the hassle of wearing 32 1/2 layers of clothing. Hell, nude jumps in January without frostbite OR shrivel factor. Let's warm this mutha up! Hell, nude jumps in January without frostbite It was +42C (as in +100F) last w/e at my dz, you can jump here in Jan, nude and be more worried about sun-burning your ass in freefall, than getting frost bite from hanging outside the door for the whole ride to height. And guys, get a grip. My entire continent is in drought, maybe for a second year if the forecast is remotely close...My country's capital is on fire 4 people dead over 100 homes destroyed and you wimpy f***s dare to sit there and complain about extreme temps and about how great an idea green house warming is?!!!!!!As for cold....you wimps. ScottishJohn 25 #11 January 23, 2003 Global warming does not mean that the entire globe will heat up but what will happen is climate change. And climate change will effect us all. some parts of the world will become hotter and drier while other parts become colder , other areas will be wetter and it's not just changes of weather patterns that we are seeing but extremes of weather as well. just because you think it is cold right now it does not mean that global warming is not happening. http://www.met-office.gov.uk/research/hadleycentre/index.html---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers

suz 0 #13 January 23, 2003 Fellow Aussie....howdie doodie!!! That's terrible about Canberra, huh? I was watching the "Today" show yesterday morning and they had a huge discussion about the fires....it's a never ending dispute....you know? People are complaining that there should be more back burning, yet then people complain that's it's detroying the Australian fauna to back burn. It's a touching issue...We so deperately NEED RAIN!!! I drove 10 hours back home today and the scenary was devastating....it's just brown everywhere. And it really pissed me off that once I got home...the local council was drowning the cement traffic islands....somone should really tell them that cement does not grow when you water it! Don't bother me, I'm living happily ever after
nacmacfeegle 0 #14 January 23, 2003 Scottishjohn has it in a nutshell. "just because you think it is cold right now it does not mean that global warming is not happening" What we all call Global Warming is better decribed as global climate change. Ole Mother Earth is susceptable to various minor changes that have far reaching repercussions, eg change of sea currents El Nino affecting both sides of the Pacific (as Jas rightly points out) for example. The ice caps drive the oceans currents and weather systems, fuck with the ice caps and the consequences are far reaching. Say the land locked ice around the poles is reduced, potentially the sea levels rise globally, goodbye Florida and much of south Texas. An extreme example, but hey, who knows? BNow then, I'm suggesting that the Earth can't tolerate a little abuse, or that the se effects wouldn't vary anyways, but there is growing correlation between mankind's tampering, and climate change on a global scale..... And hey, I don't have any easy soluitions either. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. swarley 0 #15 January 23, 2003 The globe has been warming for 1000 years or more. Its only recently that man has been able to make $$$ from predicting what is happening. The link you suggested shows how it keeps people employed (not a bad thing). QuoteIt currently employs around 100 staff and uses two Cray T3E supercomputers. Most of its funding comes from contracts with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), other United Kingdom Government departments and the European commission. ScottishJohn 25 #16 January 23, 2003 Quote The globe has been warming for 1000 years or more. Is this fact or opinion ? I don't think you deny that mans influence is having a lasting effect on the climate. The organisation I work for employs around 1200 - 1300 people so around 100 working on climate is not an awful lot. We also have visiting scientist who come and work here from all over the world to use our facilities (cray's and climate models) Here is a breakdown of our funding taken from annual report. Money for climate reaserch is quite small when you compare it to the rest of the stuff we do. This is not some new "get rich quick scheme" to rob the tax payers many countries including the USA have Meteorological agencies which use large computer systems for modeling the atmosphere and oceans, we are not unique in that respect. A lot of governments are putting money into climate research as we are now more aware of the impact we doing. Wither the governments wish to do anything about the results they get from the research is a different matter. 2 001/2 2000/1 £'000 £'000 £'000 customer Core Direct Total Services Defence MoD 27,200 29,790 56,990 Civil Aviation CAA 16,711 9,642 26,353 Civil Departments 27,200 9,919 37,119 Climate Research DEFRA 7,758 7,758 Commercial 21,547 21, 547 Other 4,992 4,992 Total turnover 71,111 83,648 154,759---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you think my attitude stinks you should smell my fingers

Well, Since the thermometer was only invented 300-500 years ago, I don't have the data The Scientists are split 50/50 on this issue, but i do know that there are a lot of people making $$$. If the environmentalists are correct about the world running out of oil, then this problem will solve itself in a hundred years or so. ERICCONNELLY 0 #18 January 23, 2003 Actually no.. In a misguided attempt by the media to be "Balanced" it may seem that way but actually almost all scientists agree that GW is real and a significant threat. The only ones that argue this point mostly work for petro peddlers. E
