riddler 0 #1 January 25, 2003 Mom just called and gave me the news since I don't have a television, but there was apparantly a king air and cessna crash today in north Denver. That's all the information I have. No web sites have been updated as of yet. There are two DZs in Colorado that have King Airs, but they don't normally fly that close to Denver. Nonetheless, I would like to hear anything else if anyone gets any more information. Correction - initial reports said a king air, but they have changed that. They now say a cessna and a twin-engine piper cheyenne. All CO DZs have cessna's, but again, they don't normally fly that close to Denver. The impact site is a little under 3 miles away from my house. I was in quiet meditation at the time, but I didn't hear anything.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. skycat 0 #4 January 25, 2003 It's actually a Chyanne (sp) and a C-172. Derek was actually in the air flying a C-182 about 5 min south of it when it happened. He heard everything on the radio from both planes and ATC. His flight path had him over fly the accident just minutes after it happened.Fly it like you stole it! Hooknswoop 19 #6 January 25, 2003 It was erie listening to approach call the call signs of both aircraft and not get a response. The more the controller called, the more you could hear the worry and anxiety in his voice. He had just issued a traffice advisory to the Cheyenne, "traffic 1 mile at 12 o'clock". The Cheyenne pilot responded, "I'm looking". Then nothing. My course took me right over the top of the crash sites. I was surprised ATC didn't vector me around. They dropped me from 10,500 to 8,500, then 8,000. I could see three different clusters of emergency vehicles and smoke from one of them. My condolences to the pilots of both aircraft, any passengers and their families. Hook
LouDiamond 1 #7 January 25, 2003 4 Die As 2 Planes Collide, Crash In Colo. By KATHERINE VOGT .c The Associated Press DENVER (AP) - Two small planes collided and crashed into a residential neighborhood Friday, killing four people in the aircraft and injuring seven on the ground. There were no survivors on either plane, Denver Manager of Safety Tracy Howard said. Crews were still searching for other possible victims. A twin-engine plane crashed into yard, narrowly missing a house and garage. Two people died in that plane, Howard said. Two people aboard the other plane, a single-engine aircraft, were killed when it crashed into a house, fire officials said. ``That plane blew up. It disintegrated,'' police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez said. It was not clear whether anyone was in the house when it was hit. Six people in the neighborhood, including a 2-year-old, suffered minor injuries from flying debris, said Bev Lilly of St. Anthony Central Hospital. They were in good condition. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration identified the planes as a twin-engine Piper Cheyenne II and a Cessna 172 Skyhawk. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Arnold Scott told KCNC-TV the Cessna was bound for Cheyenne, Wyo., from Centennial Airport in Denver. The Piper took off from Jefferson County Airport northwest of Denver and was bound for Centennial Airport. Ed Mascarenas, 36, was driving through an alley when heard a loud noise, looked up and saw a plane spinning toward the ground. He said it crashed between a house and a garage. Mascarenas said he ran to the wreckage and tried to pull open the door but failed. ``Nobody got out. I tried to get in there. I could hear someone,'' he said. He said there was fuel spilling from the plane. Maureen Ulevich, who was walking her dog, heard a loud bang and looked up to see a plane. ``It looked to me like the left wing had fire and smoke. It was sort of spiraling down toward the ground, not nose down but sort of flat,'' she said. ``It looked as if there was fire in the engine.'' David Finn, 38, said one of the planes crashed into a house near his. He said he went inside to investigate and saw a large piece of debris that looked the tail. Finn said he had just left the house when it exploded, injuring people around him. ``The were shocked and they started to run,'' he said. 01/25/03 00:34 EST"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
CanuckInUSA 0 #8 January 25, 2003 Man I hate to say this, but I'm glad the Cessna wasn't from Jeffco. Because if it was, it would likely have been a McAir airplane (the club I rent airplanes from) and I might have know the people involved. But this doesn't seem to be the case. My condolences to those involved as well as their friends and families. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
riddler 0 #9 January 25, 2003 Thanks for the firsthand report Hook. Just want to point out that this is definitely not skydiving related, since neither of those airports support skydiving operations, and all Cessnas in CO are (I think) 206s. I do have several friends that fly at both airports, however Some are students and instructors and fly a few different plane types, so I'll have to wait for more. In the meantime, I'm off to Brush for the weekend. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
Muenkel 0 #10 January 27, 2003 They updated this on the news last night. It turns out that one of the pilots was a 20 year old who survived the Columbine massacre. Sad news for all involved.
