phatcat 0 #1 January 31, 2003 Kinda stupid question: Generally, around how much do you have to pay on a toll road? We don't have them around here so I have no idea. I'm planning a trip where I'll be on a few and need to plan accordingly.
mattb 0 #2 January 31, 2003 depends on the state In Illinois each toll costs between 40 and 75 cents (with some exceptions that are $2.00) and tolls are every X miles on the highways where X varies according to no logic. Oh and some on/off ramps charge between 10 and 35 cents. Love the government!
Shark 0 #3 January 31, 2003 Bring your wallet. Actually, it's all the rage in sunny SoCal these days. It can be variable in some car pool lanes, 0.50-4.50.

I'm planning a trip where I'll be on a few and need to plan accordingly. The one I go to work on every day costs 75 cents one way (that is 2 toll booths).. however if you get down to the lsat toll it's 2.25!!! Such a stupid way of doing things, they charge based on the toll booth you're going through so you could get on right before the last toll booth and pay 2.25 or get on 5 toll booths back and still pay 2.25.. nuts. NJ does it right, they charge based on how far you go. Kevin
PhillyKev 0 #5 January 31, 2003 QuoteNJ does it right, they charge based on how far you go. Except the bridges. It costs nothing to cross from Philly to NJ, but $4 to get back. I guess they figure people are more willing to pay to get OUT of Jersey than in to it.
phatcat 0 #6 January 31, 2003 Heh, so basically it varies a crapload. I guess I'll bring a big ol' wad of $1's and hope for the best Thanks!
Sebazz1 2 #7 January 31, 2003 All the bridges in the Bay Area range from $2 to $3. When I was in SoCal couple of weeks ago I went through two toll booths within a 4 mile distance of each other. One was like $4.15 and the other one was like $2.20. Weird figures but go figure it is SoCal They're kinda strange...
jfields 0 #8 January 31, 2003 There are very few toll roads where I live, so I defer to the poor fools that live in NJ and California.
PhillyKev 0 #9 January 31, 2003 Quote Heh, so basically it varies a crapload. I guess I'll bring a big ol' wad of $1's and hope for the best Thanks! There's also the tolls in NJ that you can only pay with a quarter. If you don't have any change, it takes a picture of your license plate and you get mailed a fine. So bring a nice bag of change, too.
Gawain 0 #10 January 31, 2003 Despite their cost, the toll roads in Orange County have saved me hours of commute time every week. Not to mention the hours saved when I'm in the field meeting with clients. My toll costs (Route 73, bypassing I-405) about $4-5 per day total. I use the "FastTrak" which is ultra cool, because you just zoom through and you get a statement at the end of the month (saves money too). Don't even have to slow down . A lot of people aren't fond of it apparently. Personally, the roads are in good shape, and they are simply beautiful drives too. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! jessd 0 #11 January 31, 2003 Really does depend on the State. I think th Tobin Bridge in Boston is $3 or so. But, if you are going to be driving down the Jersey Turnpike - better start saving now. christoofar 0 #12 January 31, 2003 Houston and Dallas have toll highways which are under a dollar at the booths. An interesting project is underway in Texas to erect a tollroad between Austin and San Antonio... the idea being: people will want to pay to avoid all the construction in New Braunfels and San Marcos (which never ends, and is scheduled to be completed by the time hell freezes over). Pretty sneaky, eh? ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES! Fo shizzle.
blewaway5 0 #13 January 31, 2003 Toll what? Hehe, sometimes I love Missouri. We may have some of the crappiest roads in the country but there's not a single toll both on a road in MO. Truman Sparks for President
AggieDave 6 #14 January 31, 2003 With the money you save on toll roads, you can buy new shocks for your car. How nice... --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
jfields 0 #15 January 31, 2003 But Missouri has Fort Leonard Wood, where I had the bad luck to spend Basic Training. I'd take the tolls, thank you.
PhillyKev 0 #16 January 31, 2003 We have the best of both worlds. Crappy roads AND tolls...AND fines for when the police move your car to shoot a movie and put it in a no parking spot.
blewaway5 0 #17 January 31, 2003 Been there, took the tour for an ROTC class I took in college. The only part that kind of freaked me out was the NBC training compound in the middle of the woods. Didn't get to go in of course, but got to drive around it while told us that it was one of the only places that nasty things like VX and anthrax and all their friendly little cousins are actually alive. That coupled with the fact that they had those bunkers set up all around it, but facing in towards it not out to guard it, kind of made fe feel funny. Luminous 0 #18 January 31, 2003 Bring a couple rolls of quarters. That way you can go thru the change lanes instead of waiting behind the dude that doesn't have anything smaller than a $50. skymedic 0 #19 February 1, 2003 in chicago area they were like 40 or 50 cents...each...when I lived in florida it cost me almost 5.00-6.00 bucks to make it to work everyday on the 417...but man it was so much nicer than taking the fucking I-stroll...I mean I-4... SpeedRacer 1 #20 February 1, 2003 NJ is NOTORIOUS for tolls...I swear they've got another toll booth every other mile. It would be neat if one of the military people on this forum would take a quick run down the Interstate with a tank & take 'em all out once and for all!
