Trolls, Post Whores, and Locked threads.

Recommended Posts

What is it with you people? Moths to the flame ring a bell?

What Thomas has done has worked much better than even he (I think) guessed it would.
He makes one post, and it seems that everyone has to post on the thread, to "hijack" it.

I call Bull$#it! It's the spotlight! The glory! Posting to a thread you know will be locked if you post to it is just assinine. The easiest way to silence a troll is to ignore it, or have you all forgotten that? No replies and the post would have faded into oblivian in short order. A simple delete by a greenie would have happened, had he bumped it up himself, but he didn't, did he?

No. You people kept it going with reply after reply, so that people just logging on would be able to see it, and get mad at him.

I find it somewhat humerous that it was locked after he made his second post to the thread, with no personal attacks, hell, not even a swear word. All he had to do was post and BAM it got locked.

I know boredom can get the best of you all (y'all) at times, but please, please DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS

Which reminds me, has anyone ever seen a real troll? I'm not talking about those cute little ones with the wild hair you find for sale on E-bay and what not, but a big, ugly, smelly troll? I don't think I've ever seen a good picture of one. Anyone have a pics of a real troll?:D;)

Opie,
This post is a general comment, though the recent locked thread made it easier to illustrate. I had been thinking this for some time now, and knew it would happen again sometime soon.

You get the same thing over on rec dot skydiving. Catch is, over there you can use a killfile. Here, the thread just keeps coming back.

Please, people. If it's obviously a troll thread, just ignore it so it goes away. Repeatedly posting to it makes you just as trollish as the original poster.

Lou,
Nope, never seen one, but my kids think they live under the bridge down the street!

The thread was started after I went to bed last night and I didn't see it until CT had posted to it again this morning. If I had seen it last night when he posted it, it would have been gone. And, I agree with you Jim, not posting anything at all is better than hijacking it.

Maybe it's spring fever, cabin fever, just a plain old fever, but you see it in all the forums....Some people have been hot under the collar lately.

I do have cabin fever. We had 2 good snowfalls in the last week, first ones since October, so I've been out plowing. It reminded me that the jump season is still a ways away.

I know what you are saying Jim and in general agree that no posts would of made it disappear quickly. However I think the feeling of the posters was to demonstrate that they can post without letting the original intent of the thread develop by hijacking it.

I just find it ironic that you suggest ignoring it altogether yet mention the name of the person that started the thread. Thereby giving them the same satisfaction of those that posted.

though i see your point jim.
isnt every thread hijacked in some form or another?
(or it that just me!:o)

if we have an undisirable poster, what does it matter if you ignore his thread or if we huijack it. its basically just another conversation. its not like that undesirable poster is gonna evaporate!
even in real life you cant avoid these people!
I bet you work with them everyday! we are dealing with it the same way here! anway i didnt hijack this thread...surprise;)

OK, so I get a high irony score for using the name. I accept that.

If you must post, please address the subject in the trolls thread with civility, and ask that nobody else feed the trolls. that way they get one reply, a few reads, and poof, it's gone. Constantly replying to "hijack" the thread still brings up the original, deragatory post, and usually more hard feelings and posts. Hijacking can be fun, when the thread in itself isn't bad, but a blatant troll? Why?

Jt, this is also an answer to you. Hijacking, as I said, is fun at times, but, as I also said, it brings the troll to the surface way too often.

And on another point. When you come to the forums after some time away, as in a day or 2, there are pages of new threads to read. Really, how many people, unless they are extremely bored, actually read all those threads? I look for interesting subjects, and those with alot of activity. Those with few views and/or little to no replies get skipped over, by me. I think since they were not of interest to anyone else, why waste my time with them?

I agree, it's gotta be something. I think it's lack of activity in general. I've made a few cold weather jumps since Eloy but since then it's been all but impossible, so yesterday I spent the whole day snowboarding like a crazed retard. I think the term adrenaline withdraws should be here by coined for the condition skydivers go through when they aren't getting any air time or adrenaline inducing substitute activities.;)

BTW, how is it that Trolls got such a bad rap? Do we actually know that feeding a troll is bad?;)

not really. I had enough practice at blinc with my "nest crapping antics" that I was pretty sure locks would come about. I just wonder if this thread will get locked because I posted to this also. That would be interesting.
Personal attacks? I asked a greenie about them once. This helped me phrase them properly. It may sound crazy, but consider the source..(dribbled basketball of a kid), I did not start flame wars. They are not my invention, nor my brilliant new idea. They have been around long before I was posting. I just thought it would be fun to join in. And it has been. I haven't laughed like this since I was a little girl.
Swearing? I'm surprised HH allows it, but then again, maybe he isn't so confined by "business". That's the best part. Someone that allows swearing and booby pics.
I'm surprised HH let me stay as long as he did. When all this began, I actually did ask him to ban me from here. but, I may have had a valid reason, and he may have considered it, and decided he could tolerate me awhile.
Thanks HH. You run a great site. And the rest of the greenies.....sorry for the headaches.
Peace,
Thomas :)

We're all in agreement that Sangiro is a great guy, and a very tolerant owner. :)
My question......why would you ask someone to ban you ? It would seem to me that any skydiver (and especially a BASE jumper) would have enough self-discipline to regulate his own posts, and not have to rely on a greenie to do it for him. If you have enough discipline to learn how to save your life on every jump, you should also be able to control your typing fingers.

Tom, this is in no way a slur on you. I come to TalkBack for the laughs that are always available, and you've made me chuckle countless times. And I'll even admit that I am not the nicest person here.....I'll go for the cheap-shot as often as anyone, and for the smart-ass remark more than most. But I never go out of my way to tell all my fellow DZ.commers to 'go fuck themselves, or "fuck you all".....if I felt that way, why would I even bother to log on here ? I can understand that some people like to stir the pot.....just don't do it so vigorously that it slops over onto the burner, and sets the whole house ablaze.

This community has changed in both size and attitude since I started hanging out in here....and I look at this in mixed ways. More size means more diverse backgrounds, and different attitude means I get to experience more diverse viewpoints on life. Yes, I sometimes miss the smaller, more laid-back community we once had -- but I'm just as often glad for the newer folks here, and even prouder in the fact that Sangiro has grown this site from a one-room grass hut on the African savannah into the Five-Star luxury hotel you see before you now.

Yeah, Tom, I sometimes think you're weird.....but I like wierd people, as long as they aren't homicidal as well. :)
