AggieDave 6 #2 February 3, 2003 Unfortunately I'm behind the curve when it comes to DVD burners, so I can't help you there, but here's what I've done in the past: Rip the DVD using your favorite ripping software (this, even with a monster machine, will take a while). Once ripped you can convert the files into a Divx format for small file size or an appropiate codec for a VCD.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #4 February 3, 2003 I haven't really messed with it since the 1st gen rippers were around, DeCSS is what I used then, but its outdated and will no longer work with most of the new titles out there.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." jessd 0 #5 February 3, 2003 Not sure either. I am hoping to buy a DVD burner within the next month or so - so if you have not figured it out by then I will let you know. IGOLOW 0 #6 February 3, 2003 Check out this site http://www.digital-digest.com. They have information on making copies of DVDs. Most of the time an original dvd takes up more than one layer of a disc. What I normally do is rip the DVD using smartripper. This will rip off only the movie tracks that are needed. It will leave out all the extra stuff on the disc. It also removes any encryption that would normally prevent you from copying the disc. Then I use dvdit to burn the DVD. IGOLOW 0 #8 February 3, 2003 There is also a program called DVD X-COPY that si supposed to make an exact copy of the disc. I'm not sure exactly what it does or how well it works. I think it's a little too expensive ($100.00). The smartripper software may be a little more time consuming but it is free. I doubt that the drive would ship with software that would allow a direct copy of a commercial DVD disc. This would mean that they would have to bypass security encryption in the disc. Gawain 0 #9 February 3, 2003 You know, there was a kid in Norway or Finland...well, northern Europe anyway that was cleared of any wrongdoing by a court about a DVD recording software he created and distributed on the web. Someone here posted to story, I can't find it though. Sounds like it's just what you're looking for.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Guest #12 February 3, 2003 Does anybody know of a freeware /open source product that will convert DVD to VCD/avi/wmv? I imagine there is a Linux version at this point, because I have seen commercial versions."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." AggieDave 6 #13 February 3, 2003 DeCSS was written for that specific reason, cracking the DVD encryption so they could write a DVD player for open source OSes.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

As you can see from my first post I have done it myself. What I am saying is that I don't know of any DVD-Burner manufacturer that ships software with their drive that allows you to bypass security measures that are in the disc. CDs never contained this type of security.

Kevin Post this in Photo and Video, you will get a lot more response there. i'm not an expert, but in general it's more complicated than just copying a CD-RW. Also, what is the video you bought that you want to copy? Most DVD's are copy-protected so that you cannot just copy them to another DVD. they are smart enough to do that at least... Also ask Cajones, he know a lot more about DVD's and copying them. peacehttp://www.exitshot.com
