phatcat 0 #1 February 3, 2003 Long story short, I just got canned. This comes in the middle of planning to drive down to Waller or Spaceland for a week to jump. In light of me being jobless, I've decided to extend that vacation permanently. I know there are many Texas jumpers here and I'm wondering if any are around the Houston area that could give any info about living there. Specifically, costs of living, schools, temp. jobs, etc. I think I'll be going to the southern Houston area (close to Spaceland). If you have anything post it, PM me, or email at joshmt@earthlink.net.

AggieDave 6 #3 February 3, 2003 The Bryan school district (north of Houston about an hour and a half) has been voted by the Texas Teachers association one of the best in recent years and has had great TAAS scored too. If that's the schools you're looking for, you didn't specify age groups. Cost of living in the College Station/Bryan area is LOW since it is a college town/area, although, there is still a large amount of families here. Also, this isn't your normal college town, you'd have to see it to understand, Aggies aren't exactly your normal college students. This would put you north of Houston, but you'd have SD Aggieland and SD Houston (waller) right there. Basically, for the Houston "area" this is the lowest cost of living. What sort of work are you looking for?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
phatcat 0 #4 February 3, 2003 Thanks, Dave, I'm checking into Bryon on the net. Already found some possibilities. Do you jump at Waller? If so, tell them to check their damn email!

airann 1 #9 February 3, 2003 LOL @ check email!!! Dude, living here is good - but not without a job. That sucks really bad. Finding a job is dependens on what you have niched out for yourself. If you are open then thats a good thing. If you are in a certain line of work it could be bad, again depending. I live inbetween both dz's and I jump both when I am jumping. It depends on what day I am jumping as to where I go. I personally feel like Beltway 8 and Westheimer is the best place to live. You cant spit and not hit a skydiver over here, both RW and Freeflyers. In addition, it is convienent to areas of town in which you might work. Anyway, its a nice start. You have your choice of dz.s. Depends on what kind of dz 'feel' you want. ~AirAnn~
wmw999 2,589 #10 February 4, 2003 I live in Houston, too. Lots of schools, a reasonable amount of cheap housing (depending on your definition of cheap), and it's really hard to live without a car if you don't have one. But you can almost certainly find a job if you want one; my son's in school, and hasn't had any trouble when he's gone looking. But out-of-state tuition is pretty high. You might want to work until you get in-state status. Winters are mild, obviously. And there are plenty of places besides the Westheimer-Galleria area to live. I'd suggest finding work first, then finding a place to live close to there. Traffic can really suck, and having a 15-minute commute beats having an hour-long commute any day of the week. phatcat 0 #11 February 4, 2003 Thanks a bunch Wendy and everybody else. This is the first time (I'll buy beer when I get down there!) that I've literally picked up my shit and moved on - it's always been in gradual steps before. I'm going to bed - I have a LOT of work to do tomorrow. Thanks all
wmw999 2,589 #12 February 4, 2003 Oh, um, one thing -- leave the razor at home, OK? You don't want to have to explain why you're walking carefully to potential employers Wendy W.
