Traditoin does call for beer, but which kind is generally up to the buyer. Beware though, cheep beer is generally frowned upon. Doesn't have to be the best, but better not be some PBR or Beast Lite crap either. As far as substituting spirits, that's kinda up to the people who will be partaking, but I'd suggest sticking with the beer. :)

ok, just so i dont screw it up and spend my life doomed to solo jumps, can some one explain the beer rule as if explaining to a 2 year old... who has trouble understanding... and isn't paying attention.

I'm doing a full AFF course, levels 1-8 then 10 consolodation jumps, then hopefully 1 as a non student.

I'm learning with a british company on an american DZ, Sebastian.

How many beers will i need to buy, which beer, for who, and at what points..?

In my opinion, you only need to buy a case of beer, for the general population at the dz, when you graduate from your AFF training. You just go buy it, set it down on the table and start offering it to people. It will disapprear before your eyes! Anyone who says you need to buy more than that just wants free beer! If you got the same instructor the whole time and felt he or she did a great job, you could always get them a little extra. As for type, Corona and Heineken are always good choices.

Generally, as a student you are not expected to have to buy a case until you pass your Cat 8.
Then it gets a little expensive...basically you are sharing a milestone/story with other skydivers,
when the beerlight comes on and you get handed a "free" beer, you ask what the story is, and go and congratulate/commiserate the guy/girl who bought the beer.

Popular milestones include:

First: Solo
First: 2 way 3 way etc...
First: Reserve ride (may cost you a bottle of spirits or whatever the rigger drinks)
First: 50 jumps/100 and every number ending with 00/000
New dropzones/planes/rigs....you get the idea.
And of course if you do something really st00pid. ;)

Oops, missed the fact you're student still. It is bad form to pressure students to buy beer. To many things going on you're doing for the first time. But, having said that, once you're off student status you owe beer and then for big firsts after that. "Beer" can be interpreted as one case of decent beer.

My limited experience only, it really depends on the DZ on what kind of beer or spirits are acceptable. Up at Skydive Oregon, a case of Bud won't cut it. Micro-brew stuff only (I was almost scurged for bringing Heinikens once).

Down here in SoCal, I've found a more flexible audience when I've owed it. Either way, I don't worry about whether people like it or not. I don't drink so the fact that I even buy it should be good too! :P

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I hope I do not get in trouble for this from the experienced folks but here we go...

Students are exempt from beer rules. A student does not have to buy beer until they graduate AFF or whatever training method they are using. Once off student status then of course you will being buying plenty of "cases" for what seems to be first time events and signifigant achievements on like every other jumpB|...

What to buy??

Depends were you are, and what region you are in. Some regions or DZ's might expect fine quality micro brews while other places are more happy with a case of miller lite:P. You gotta feel out the individual DZ. Actually another good idea would be to figure out what you Jump Master likes. After all who cares what anyone else thinks about you but your JM. They're the person you need to impress:D

Spirits vs. Beer?

There will always be a need for beer to chase spirits if you bring any. At my current home DZ, Crown Royal is a nightly favorite but not a substitute for beer.

Hope that helps brotherB| Good luck with training...

Agreed and this applies to any of the firsts. ie. reserve ride, broken bones, tree landings. Although, I don't suggest that one should try these while a Student for the purpose of beer exemption.

I always bring the kind of beer I like to drink. After all it's your first, your celebration. Beer is beer, it will be appreciated.
And variety being the spice of life, you could bring some new beers from duty free and expose the dz to new and exciting tastes. We all know what mixing your drinks can do:S

NB: if you turn up with Bud Lite you may be refused entry until you return with real beer.....
