airtwardo 7 #51 February 6, 2003 TIME OUT! Who said ANYTHING about rape?! I was refering to the rather 'open' dating policies some of the women in the U.K. were known to observe with Americans during that period of time...often thought of as the actual begining of the 'sexual reveloution' If sincerely apologise if my tounge in cheek refrence was taken to mean that I belived U.S. soliders were raping English women... I perhaps get a bit too enraged when someone defends Hittler as 'compasionate' ...he was not, he was crazy! I have gone through the photos my dad took of 2 concentration camps he helped to free...and listen to his stories. I have walkd through the grave yards atop Omaha Beach...thinking of the costs of Hittler's 'dream' I have been to Russia and their memorials to "The Great War" and studied their history of loss in defending their homeland from that zealot, that country alone is belived to have loss over 50 MILLION people as a result of Hittlers madness....That 1 fifth of the population of the U.S !!! So yes I made an overly agressive 'attack' on an argument that seeks to glorify a person (Hittler) through " Facts " that are questionable to say the least. ...That 'style' of argument is exactly what is being used today in an attempt to downplay and ridicule what Sadam is forceing the leauge of nations to do. ...then as now there was opposition to impending war, then as now...The U.S. has to be the worlds policeman... I don't like it..then or now...but please don't tell me we're wrong, that either of these guys is compasionate... It is "Pop Culture" now to get a tattoo... The numbers tattooed on my father-in-law's arm are history NOT pop culture! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
kallend 2,219 #52 February 6, 2003 Quote Incidentally, the German replacement for Knickebein (I don't think it was called Gerat-X, wasn't that the giant radar stations) was found and was perhaps even easier to spoof. No! www.valourandhorror.com/BC/Tactics/X_gerat.htm www.zary.com.pl/monogram/ba/Artykuly/Xgerat/X-Gerat.htm www.f-e-mail.com/images/X-Gerat.htm And unlike knickebein, jamming it wasn't very effective: www.cs.berkeley.edu/~randy/Courses/CS39K.S03/radio_navigation.html... kallend 2,219 #53 February 6, 2003 Quote ...If young Americans (like my father) hadn't stepped in to fight a war that "the US really had no business fighting"..... You, my warm beer drinking, wrong side of the road driving, soon to be off student status, friend...WOULD BE SPEAKING GERMAN!!! IF IF IF IF... If Churchill hadn't rallied the UK/Commonwealth to continue to fight in 1940 when everyone else had quit or sat on their hands (like the US Ambassador to Britain recommended to Roosevelt), the whole world would be speaking German. If the Greeks hadn't held up the Italian army for three weeks in spring 1941... If Hitler hadn't delayed Barbarossa and diverted troops to deal with the Greeks... If the Russians hadn't held Moscow in December 1941... If the 9th Armored Division hadn't found the Germans retreating across the bridge at Remagen... If the British Navy hadn't effectively destroyed the entire Italian Navy at Taranto, Vichy French Navy at Oran, rendered ineffective the German surface fleet and held Malta thus taking control of the Mediterranean and cutting off the Afrika Korps... If Polish patriots hadn't smuggled an Enigma machine to Britain... If the 101st hadn't held at Bastogne... We can play this game for months.... You are totally right. We'll never know which events were "pivotal", if such a thing even really exists in that definition. It is far too complicated to put into a nice tidy decision tree.
