Publicizing an ignorant idiot

Recommended Posts

Canada.com story

A friend of mine in Canada sent this link; it's pretty amazingly cruel to get children involved in national politics. All I could do was hope that enough publicity will make whoever thought that was a good decision feel like a complete idiot.

Of course, they seem to have removed all reference to the contest, other than a pointer to a dead link.

Wendy W.

thanks for posting the link Andyman -- I went there intending to get it so I could, and then forgot when I went looking around...
There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

That's just absolutely uphauling!!!

Thanks for the link too Andyman!

I've sent Mr. Knox an email voicing my disgust for this matter. I don't usually do this sort of thing but I felt it was justified here. I hope I am not the only one and I hope Mr. Knox is compelled to come down off his high horse and get back to the honnorable job he obviously once wanted to do.

I mean, how can he use the words: "this is a time in history when we need to be together" while segregating children? Does he not see the contradiction?

Dumbass!

Wendy, that really is a sad story, and AndyMan, thanks for that link. I decided to send the guy an email that went like this:

Dear Mr. Knox,
I'd like to say that I think you perform an incredibly important function. Any person actively involved in trying to protect the children who are hurt by gang violence and trying to educate children about the dangers of being a member of gangs is indeed doing noble work.
I do, however, have to question your refusing to allow Canadian and German children to participate in your poster contest. While I can understand adults having to worry about politics it is a sad day when we have to drag our children into the mess. According to the story I read you admitted that Iraq has absolutely nothing to do with with anti-gang research and school safety issues, saying your thought that "this is a time in history when we need to be together."
Sir, I ask you these two questions. How is refusing children the privilege of competing in a poster contest going to bring anyone together? How are other countries going to look at Americans in light of this?
We are already looked down upon in the international community as being arrogant and petty, so much so that I know several people who claim to be Canadian when they travel abroad. I seriously doubt that using a children's poster contest as political leverage is going to improve that image.
Please reconsider your stated policy on this, if not for the sake of the children you are supposed to be working to protect then for the sake of all us Americans who are tired of having to feel embarassed for the arrogant actions of a few.

With best regards,
Stephen M. Sparks

How do you guys think that is?

It's the action of one group (He didn't "just do it" alone) of looking at the state of present politics and went with the "FRIEND OR FOE" judgment.
His Dept has no effect on actual World politics but, just as a statement.
I'm Canadian/Scotch, still have family there, my 1/2brother is Suisse,& my Step-Mom is French and works Counter-terrorism for InterPol in Lyon.
>>>>>Excluding a few children from a contest is stupid and counterproductive.
The fact is a lot of countries(Can,Fra,Ger,etc) HATE the U.S. and blame them for most all World problems.
The Media does not broadcast to the U.S. just how much daily resentment is from neighboring and other countries. (travel and see other news casts)
The FRIEND or FOE list should be done by the "Joint Chiefs of Staff" not and Urban/teen program.
Our house hold talks of Police work and not World Politics>>it's safer;)

I hate to say it, but it's not going to change their minds much. To an outside observer we're a pretty warlike and vicious country that uses force instead of diplomacy. We hate Iraq so much that we want its leader dead. We fund Kurdish terrorists hoping to topple him from power. Heck, just refusing some kid's poster doesn't even make it on the scale of bad things we do.

And yes, it's sad that we behave this way. But many americans do feel that way, that anyone who's not with us is against us. Our own president said as much, so it doesn't suprise me that some people take him at his word.

Well, as everyone likes to use similar arguments against the US: What does it say about a country that allows Hamas to operate and raise funds legally (i.e. catagorized by the govt as a "non-terrorist" organization)? What does a society like that have to offer kids in the way of anti-gangs, anti-violence, whatever?

Whom am I speaking of? Canada.

I'm not saying any of the parties involved are right. I am suggesting that everyone, including us, needs to be aware of the three fingers pointing backwards when we point a finger outward.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I think you're all too kind :)
Check out mine:

Mr. Knox,

I'v recently read an article on canada.com about your anti-gang
poster contest. I was absolutely uphauled to hear that you had
invited Canadian children to participate only to change your mind and
turn them away (Germany too?). Your motives are questionable at best
and while I don't usually make a point to contact people I read about
in the news, I figured I absolutely had to voice my oppinion as I
hope many others are doing right now.

I would suggest you spend a little time in front of a mirror and ask
yourself why you even got involved with this "National Gang Crime
Research Centre" in the first place. Perhaps you would have been a
better politician? I don't understand how one could utter the words:
"this is a time in history when we need to be together." in defence
of your horrible desire to segregarte these poor kids. Do you not
realize the contradiction.

Anyway, I don't expect you to take the time or to care enough to
reply. My only hopes are that my email is but one of many, that you
take the time to read them, And that they compell you to get down off
your high horse and back to the honnorable job you once wanted to do.
