SpeedRacer 1 #76 February 7, 2003 sphere question: assuming sphere was solid material all the way through: since radius = 1 then [(4xpi)/3] - [2 x pi x r^2] where r is the radius of the drilled hole. wildblue 7 #77 February 7, 2003 Quotesince radius = 1 then I went through this one before, it's harder than that because the radius of the sphere isn't 1, it's slightly more than that. If you drilled through a flat surface, that'd be correct, but you have a cylinder with a length of 2 that is missing, as well as the two caps on each end, or partial spheres.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

wildblue 7 #88 February 7, 2003 QuoteI took the cylinder into account by subtracting the formula for the volume of the cylinder (of course the diameter of the hole is unknown) If I remember right, and this was a long time ago I went through it, the cool part about the problem is that the diameter of the hole isn't important. If you had a speher that was, let's say 2.5 inches in diamter, the diameter of the hole isn't going to be that big, and you haven't drilled that much out. Now, if you have something a basketball, the diameter of the hole you drilled is going to have to be huge to make the length of it only 2 inches - you've taken a huge chunk out, and what's left will be the same as the spehere of 2.5 inches, speaking in volumes. edit: you can use what I just told you to figure out an answer.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

JumpCrazy 0 #93 February 7, 2003 QuoteQuoteA girl is locked in a room. In the room there is a only baseball bat, a piano, and a saw. This girl was clever enough to find three different ways out of the room by using these items. What are the three ways out? 1. Saw the piano in half put the two halves together to make a whole, and climb through the (w)hole. 2. Ditto but with the bat. 3. Hit the piano with the bat to shake loose a key, then unlock the door with the key. I fact, she didn't need the saw - she could have hit her toe with the bat to make it a little sore, and used that saw. ANd having got out of the room, she should shout enough to make herself a little hoarse, and ride away on it. impressive... she can also swing the bat 3 times, so three strikes, shes out. last she can run around and around the room until she wears herself out.Flying Hellfish #
QuickDraw 0 #94 February 7, 2003 Take 8 balls and weigh four on each side, if they balance, then the defective ball is in the last four, split the last 4 into 2 and repeat, etc.etc.. -- Hope you don't die. -- I'm fucking winning
jfields 0 #95 February 7, 2003 Nope. That won't work. If the 4 balls on each side do not balance, then you don't know which side the defective ball is in, since it could be either lighter or heavier. How do you propose to find the ball in 2 more measurements in that scenario?
