ladyskydiver 0 #26 February 1, 2003 I started with AFF. Made the decision that if I wanted to spend the money on a jump, I was going to do it "myself" (as in pull my own ripcord and listen to the instructor to get back to the ground). And..oops! Got hooked. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile. 174fps 1 #28 February 1, 2003 Quote I did my FJC with IAD style dispatch, then on to PFF, then back for more IAD's lol, then back to PFF. James started out as our"PFF from hell" ended the season as our "Rookie of the Year" I also did IAD, fell off the strut (my right hand has a few bits missing) had to come back the next week and do it right. Unutsch 0 #30 February 1, 2003 i did it the old way, i went through a static line course... well, my father and his best friend were "skydivers" back in the 70s (each made some 10 jumps). and then my father's bestfriend's son just happened to be my best friend; he is exactly 3 years older, thus he started jumping 3 years prior to me, but did not like it because of the round canopies. he got more involved in the sport as i too started jumping (luckyly, they started using SkyMasters for students as i decided to go throug the course ). If you brought that military surplus round rig to the DZ today, we would all have a good laugh before we threw it in the dumpster!
Guest #32 February 3, 2003 I did S/L because it was cheapest, and I wanted to do it on my own, so that I wouldn't be able to say to myself later, "Somebody had to help you / do it for you". I needed that kind of thinking at the time."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
Speer 0 #33 February 3, 2003 AFF. Bought a jump for both my son (his 18th B-Day) and myself. Might have considered S/L, but not really offered or advertized here in So Cal any more. Wasn't really interested in going for a ride, so Tandem wasn't much of a temptation, although my youngest daughter did Tandem to see what younger brother and dad were so excited about. SkyDekker 1,465 #36 February 4, 2003 A group of co-workers had planned this jump for quite some time. One of the guys backed out at the last moment. Natyurally he was not afraid, the only concern was the moneyNextw thing I know I am standing on the strut of a 182 with a static line running to the inside of the plane. I did 4 jumps like that. I had a malfunction on my third jump ever, broke 3 fingers on landing and made a 4th jump right after, just to get right back on the horse again. After that 4th jump I promised my wife that I would wait till next year, to see if I really wanted to do this. In March of the following year (as soon as the Canadian winter allowed it) I went through a Tandem Freefall Progression. So, in the end, I really did a bit of everything to get my license. SL, AFF and Tandem.

DTOXX 0 #38 February 4, 2003 AFF with video. Why? If I liked it, and I thought I would, then I would be on my way. If I did not like it then the video would be my reminder of why... On my AFF1 my radio died. I PLF'd myself directly onto the end of the old (torn to @#$^) runway directly on the big "X" with a cross wind landing. It was this or the barbed wire fence. Easy choice really. ------- D.T. Holder SIMstudy
riddler 0 #39 February 4, 2003 Just a guess that in the future, we will see more people that start with Tandems. Maybe. The DZ that I started at doesn't even teach static line, and they don't let anyone do AFF without starting on a tandem first. I wanted to go right for AFF, but I didn't have a choice at that DZ, and in the end I'm glad I did the tandem first. I wouldn't be surprised if more DZs in the future start requiring a tandem before anything else. Pros - student gets better understanding of the sensation and experience. Cons - cost/time. I still see static line programs around, but I'm guessing that most of the people that started with static line have been jumping for several years. It is cheaper and you get more jumps, but there seem to be much fewer classes than AFF.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
Sebazz1 2 #40 February 4, 2003 My very first jump ever was an AFF skydive. I wanted to be in as much control as possible. I have it on video too. I went with a group of five including myself to do the first jump course. 3 out of the five including myself are still jumping... sinker 0 #41 February 4, 2003 Me, two tandems and then AFF in 8 jumps. Had to repeat level 4 b/c I was jumping w/ a JM who weighed 130 soaking wet and I am 200. Fall rate disparity anyone? We couldn't equalize and I froze. Still pulled on my own then suited up w/ a more baggy jump suit then off we were. -the artist formerly known as sinker

dragon2 2 #49 February 10, 2003 Quote I had mixed feelings about the "authencity" of a Tandem being a jump for quite a while. Eventually, I considered it a jump...... I've done 3 tandem jumps so far. 2 because the plane was going to another DZ for a jump-in, and I couldn't jump on my own because I was a 3 jumps-SL student at the time. So I got 2 (cheap) tandem jumps which provided my first taste of freefall. Also got the sensory-overload thing out of the way this way, which wasn't a bad thing. These were my first 5 jumps, in 24 hours. Made me one happy (addicted) camper. Did another tandem last year which was the after-the-winter recurrency jump for my instructor. We jumped drogue-less for 17 seconds, and even with the added speed which was fun, I felt kinda bored. I logged the tandems in my logbook but don't count them for jumpnumbers/freefall time, even tho I can. I just feel a jump's a jump only if I jumped on my own. I am trying to arrange for a tandem night jump tho. I'm pretty much nightblind so it's not something I would easily do myself. ciel bleu, Saskia
