Sebazz1 2 #26 February 10, 2003 Quote Seriously, whats wrong with your country? I want to know, it's been bothering me for a long time. It seems that for every smart move somebody makes in the US you have at least 20 stupid things done. Well the U.S. my friend is a lot like Texas. A lot but not exactly, whereas Texans can make fun of themselves but nobody else can make fun of them. Similairly the United States is the same I believe in that they can make fun of themselves yet nobody else can or they will threaten to "open up a can of whupp ass!" on you. So keep you yellow bellied non red white and blue gripes to yerself... Feriner...Disclaimer: This post has nothing to do with the original post. No disrespect intended towards Texas or the US. No Texans where intended to be harmed by this post. Well, except for one Texan. Stanley the Clown, who is dead anyway. And the term "Whup Ass" probably originated in Texas. Bill: F%CK California!! Push 0 #27 February 10, 2003 Supporting Israel while selling weapons to the surrounding states. Disarming Saddam while driving SUVs. Considering the use of nuclear bunker busters in a land based war. Forgetting about Afghanistan. Making airlines more secure by applying measures we are all well familiar with. Fixing the problems with America's youth by making the media go away. Presidents lying under oath. Hanging up the 10 commandments in a court of law. Suing everyone for everything. Not signing the Kyoto accord and then not doing anything about it independently. What billvon just described. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you. Push 0 #29 February 10, 2003 Oh, don't worry, Canada is very, very far from perfect. I guess we're so slow and ponderous that we rarely get to make any mistakesThere just isn't a perfect country today, nor was there ever. Unfortunately, it seems that every great thing the US does is offset by something stupid, just like quade said. I'm of the opinion though that the net effect of the US will eventually turn out to be very positive because I do believe, and call me naive if you want, that they mean well. But you have to admit that sometimes they seem like a large group of children with very big toys. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. quade 4 #30 February 10, 2003 Quote Unfortunately, it seems that every great thing the US does is offset by something stupid, just like quade said. I believe it was your original assertion that the good/bad ratio was more like 1:20. I'm glad you've come down from that a bit. It's not your fault, more of a media issue really. The proof that the media in the U.S. is not controlled by the government is the way that news is reported. Generally speaking, that 1:20 ratio of yours might hold up in that particular case.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Gawain 0 #34 February 10, 2003 That's actually a great analogy, "large group of children with big toys." It does go deeper though, and not ironically, Canada's Gordon Sinclair nailed it on the head.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! quade 4 #35 February 10, 2003 Absolutely they are from Star Trek, but if you look just under the surface of the sci-fi stuff, you'll find that Star Trek is actually commentary on the human condition. In this case, the Ferengi represent late 20th century capitalisim taken to it's logical conclusion wherein virtually everything is done for profit.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Push 0 #36 February 11, 2003 As I said, I do believe they mean well, and all the things he lists are proof of that. I don't believe though, that because a country does a lot of good, it's a free ticket to have everyone ignore the bad. In fact, only by clearly identifying the bad can you work on it. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. indyz 1 #38 February 11, 2003 QuoteAbsolutely they are from Star Trek, but if you look just under the surface of the sci-fi stuff, you'll find that Star Trek is actually commentary on the human condition. It was in The Original Series, and to a lesser extend in DS9. Enterprise has a good "spirit of adventure" vibe to it. The other series were more about the particle of the week than the deeper message. I had a guy living in my dorm who had tons of TNG tapes that we would watch while eating dinner. The easiest way to piss him off was to request, "that one where they modify the deflector dish."

Take any human experience, idea, or event and extrapolate it to an extreme conclusion (time, space etc) or circumstance so it can be examined at from a less involved and hopefully more objective angle.. good science fiction (or any literature actually) is about challenging the viewer to think beyond their box..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Push 0 #40 February 11, 2003 For all good science fiction since it's time, perhaps, but definitely it did not influence Dune? quade 4 #41 February 11, 2003 I don't know if you saw last week's Enterprise, but they did a really neat HIV/AIDS stigma episode. They changed it into a disease you catch by having a Vulcan mind meld, but it was pretty obvious if you just looked past the pointed ears. I'll admit it was a bit more difficult looking past the other parts of T'Pol's anatomy though. ;^) Damn! Anyway, yeah, the U.S. is sort of evil, but hey, we get to watch Star Trek so it ain't all bad!quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
