weid14 0 #2 February 9, 2003 Quote Anybody here live in Manhattan? If so, what do you do and how well can you live as, say, a bartender? Just curious. OK, (disclaimer, I don't live in Manhatten, but know many people who live in the city).... there is a skydiver who bartends at Puck Fair (IIRC it's on the corner of Houston -- not pronounced like the city, BTW -- and broadway, or really close to it, it's right near NYU, but I digress), he jumps at the Ranch, Ranchgirl may be able to give you his email -- or you could go to their message board, everyone knows him, anyway, he'd be the best person to ask, since that's what he does. his name is Paulie, I forgot to put that in the initial post. Jimbo 0 #3 February 9, 2003 Quoteand how well can you live as, say, a bartender? Very well, if you have 15 roommates or you're willing to live in a 100 sq/ft apartment. I lived there for a year a half and had the time of my life, but I was lucky enough to be living without the burden of the normal expenses like rent and utilities. It's a great place to live if you can figure out how you're going to afford it. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. weid14 0 #5 February 10, 2003 Quote Dunno actual statistical bartender facts about NYC--but you could probably live a bit easier with a roomie.. Unless you get a walk up apartment in Harlem, you pretty much need a room mate to keep yourself to a $1000 minimum per month lease.

Blue2003 0 #7 February 10, 2003 I live right outside NYC, 20 minute drive. One thought may be to live in NJ and commute. I can take a bus to NYC every 20 minutes at the top of my block. I have friends that work in the City and live out here. Also there is alot of Bartender jobs in Bergen County right outside NYC. Everyone just about I know is in the restaurant business. Question: Why living in Manhatten?"Cloudy Skies look different through skydivers eyes. Is that a hole in the clouds I see?" Let's get driving! AirMail 0 #9 February 10, 2003 I lived in Manhattan for over 5 years. 7th Ave and 16th St. You can expect to pay at least $1000/month for a 500 sq ft studio apt almost anywhere in Manhattan, maybe less in the Lower East Side. I don't know about bartending jobs. I worked for a bank while I was there. It's a great adventure living there as long as you are not completely broke from paying rent. I say go for it. skygal3 0 #13 February 10, 2003 Cool..maybe I should flaunt my "assets" as a bartender at night as well..that should bring in some pretty good $$ (I make a mean martini and am not opposed to wearing shiny clothing)...you and I, 500 sq. ft. of living space..shouldn't be long before we get some "interested parties" in on the deal. Oh yeah, I can see it now..we can be the "bob&carol&ted&alice" of NYC (and of the new millennium..) I actually had an offer over the summer to run a business for this woman I met..she has 3 beds between central and riverside park..she and her husband are musicians..she wanted me to live with her and help her start up a "ready to wear" clothing biz...why didn't I go again?? Lived in Brooklyn for two years and had a great time. It's only a subway ride away from Manhattan and was a little cheaper. If you look in the Carroll Garden or Park Slope area, you might be able to either find something cheaper or at least larger.Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics. pilotdave 0 #16 February 10, 2003 Both of my brothers live in Manhattan. One has a 1 bedroom apartment which costs $2500 a month. The other has a studio on the edge of harlem and pays a tad less, but still wayyyyy too much. A roommate would help, but where'd ya put em? Those places are tiny. The one near harlem lives over a bar. He tried to become a bouncer but apparently he "applied" too late in the year and all those positions were filled. I'd imagine bartenders would have the same issues. Dave

flyhi 24 #18 February 10, 2003 Quote1m2=3sqft Not sure, but I think 1 m^2 =~ 9 ft^2. So 500 ft^2 is really equal to about 55 m^2. I think. It's early and I have had no coffee...yet.Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

Quote Quote Hey Sharkey, What do you mean leave the left coast - I'm in frigging ARIZONA. xoxoxoo Ma'm PUT DOWN THE PIPE AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD SLOWLY Please tell me your joking? Just in case your not. Picture a map of the US in front of you. You should have a coast on the left side of the country and a coast on the right side of the country. Now find the state your in and put your finger on the location. Is your finger closer to the water on the left side(west) of the US or the right side(east). DivaSkyChick 0 #24 February 10, 2003 Lou, Arizona may be near the West Coast but it is not, IMO, part of the LEFT coast - that is, here in Arizona, the NRA and mostly Republican thinking rules. See? Anyway, for a girl from Hollywood, Arizona is particularly far away from the coast... A friend of mine says that anything outside of California is the East Coast, and anything East of Highway 15 is the MidWest. Of course, he is from the beach. But the map idea was cute!
