Nevets 0 #1 February 11, 2003 Hey guys I need a little help. I'm buying a digital camera and printer for my mother-in-law (of all people). Anyhow, I think we have settled on a camera (Sony FC-717, 5MegaPixel, 5X zoom), But my real question is regarding the printer. We need to buy a good enough printer to support the camera but i don't want to go overboard, so if anyone can suggest something please do. Also, how many 4x6 pictures can someone expect to get out of an ink cartridge. Thanks
Scoby 0 #2 February 11, 2003 Have you pondered using a service like Ofoto or Shutterfly instead of getting a photo printer? It actually works out a lot cheaper per print, and the prints are on photo paper. I actually get them printed at my local photo store, which is a tad more expensive, but I like the immediacy. I've been largely underwhelmed by most inexpensive photo printers and the paper/ink costs are staggering. Oh yeah, and have you looked at the Nikon 5700 or Minolta Dimage 7i? Those Sony Memory stick thingies are expensive!

RevJim 0 #4 February 11, 2003 Printers are cheap nowadays. Ink is not. It takes ALOT of ink to print a page of pictures, or one 8x10. A lower cost alternative is to use Kodak services, which i do now. Oddly enough, the service was mentioned earlier, without naming Kodak. It is Ofoto. http://www.ofoto.com/RegisterKodak.jsp?sourceid=59729134703 Edit to add:There are local stores (Walgreens here) that have smart card, compact flash, cd rom, and floppy disk readers, that offer prints at the store. A bit more, usually, than online, but ready fast. Walgreens here prints 24 off a card or other media for the same price as 24 exp of 35mm, in one hour. It's your life, live it! Nevets 0 #5 February 12, 2003 Thanks for the advice guys (and gal). I've been trying to talk her out of the printer but she really wants one. She says she is only going to print the odd picture on it and get most of them printed in store. I'm sure she will once she starts buying ink cartridges. The other weekend I had to drop of 30 rolls of film for her(she took them on a four day getaway). Right now she takes2-3 pictures of everything so that she gets a good one, then she gets 2-3 copies made!!! I'm hoping that the digital will prevent her from getting 6-8 pictures of the same thing since she can choose which ones to develop. Anyhow thanks again.
