akaGQ 0 #1 February 16, 2003 OK Im tryin to get some input on this cause I know there are a wide range of careers that have been taken by everyone here but I am currently considering returning to school. Im looking to either major in Psychiatry/Psychology or Take my L.S.A.T. and get into law school I like law because I love to talk and I enjoy research and I analyze everything right down to things that I probably shouldnt. Also I took speech and debate in highschool and I loved the cross-examination part of it all. As for the psychology and psychiatry part well it goes toward talk as well as listening I have been told Im a good listener and I have plenty of freidns that come to me when they have issues and such and aside from being as I went to a shrink since about age 2 for A.D.D. well that too has a lot to do with it. But Id like some input from perhaps some that have considered it or are doing either of these as a career so Ill know some good upsides as well as downsides to this. Any information would be greatly appreciated.- GQ ... it was the love of the air and sky and flying, the lure of adventure, the appreciation of beauty ... -Charles Lindberg
Gawain 0 #2 February 16, 2003 I'd go for the LSAT first...if you don't like your score or feel that it won't get you a good enough school you can always shoot for psych. I think it's funny, you wrote "...I enjoy research and I analyze everything..." and then you mention ADD. Sounds to me that you simply get bored easily. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! wmw999 2,589 #3 February 16, 2003 I'm well into careerhood, and I'd say you should study something that interests you and gives you a good grounding. why? Because a whole lot of people don't end up working in what their degree is in. I got the sociology degree, now I'm a computer programmer. My dad got an engineering degree, and ended up teaching business at the college level. Law school translates to a lot of things, so it's not a bad choice; it gives you organization, argumentation, and helps you understand the value of research and thoroughness. Good luck regardless. No matter what, you'll own that education all your life, so make sure it's something that will enrich your soul. You'll figure out how to eat on your own... CrazyIvan 0 #4 February 16, 2003 All the above is true, I wanted to become a Doctor, started, and I end up being a computer programmer, I'd say pass the test and then see what makes you happy, just think about it a little.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. LouDiamond 1 #5 February 16, 2003 Depends on how much time you want to devote to getting that degree. A simple degree in psych might land you job as a counselor at a grade school if your lucky. You need to go on to become a psychiatrist, which is a 6 yr degree, to really make any money or truely work in your degree area. All that means is you can open your own practice and hand out meds. If you go down the laywer trail, it's somewhat similar. even after you graduate you have to take the BAR and pass then you can start out as a gopher if you get picked up by a good firm. Ultimately you will end up selling your soul like all the rest of the lawyers of the world have and reserve yourself a place in hell. So, do which ever makes you the happiest. mouth 0 #7 February 16, 2003 I say take the LSAT first. That will tell you what schools you can get into. It will also help you determine what financial aid you can get based on that score. Then if you don't like your options go for the psych stuff. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit.
jessd 0 #8 February 16, 2003 Well, I always wanted to go to Law school. I even took an LSAT study course and scheduled my test date for the LSAT, but, cancelled it. At the time I was already anxious to be done with my MBA and knew that I would could not put in the effort required for Law school. Not to mention that financially it would have been really rough. I already owe a small fortune in student loans, it is highly recommended that you don't really work while going (they say about 15-20 hours if your going part time), and the amount of time it required. I'm keeping the idea of going in the back of my mind because it is something that I have always wanted. So, just decide what you would rather do and if you can, go for it. sarge 0 #10 February 16, 2003 I was probably ADD before 'they' figured out what to call it when I was a kid. I hated school, but kept my grades up through HS to stay in sports, kept my parents, teachers and other kids off my ass! Wierder things have happened, but to the amazement of many (except my mom) I scored pretty well on the SAT's. Later, finished DePaul (pre-law/bus. m)with a 3.9, decided to go to Law School... then quit! I know too many poor lawyers (with big bills!) The few I know that are making it are work-aholics or have suffered long-n-hard! I didn''t have a hook-up in the good ol boy network and the open market is about as cut-throat and blood-thirsty as any I have ever experienced!! To make it worse... in school one hundredth of a point can seperate you from top 10% of class by several people in a class of 3-400!! What that means is the major firms get thousands of free-market resumes... most go in the garbage if you're not at least top 10% or related to somebody!! Now I'm just getting around to finishing an MBA, I think an Ph Ed degree would be a super investment... but yet for another rambling... sorry .-- I'm done with the personally meaningful and philosophical sigs!!
