hooked 0 #1 February 13, 2003 My computer is getting very noisy. Could it be the hard drive or fan? It better not be anything major, or I'm going to be . See..... my husband loves to work on computers, and sometimes he knows what he's doing, but it takes him forever to get anything done!! My rant for the day! skygal3 0 #4 February 13, 2003 well what type of a computer is it-a tower or a laptop? Go ahead and thump the tower-I wouldn't suggest thumping a laptop. Is it a Dell perchance?? I ask because in 2001 I bought a brand new Dell desktop, right after Windows XP came out and the tower was noisy as hell and I would thump it and it would stop. My laptop on the other hand, I had to replace the hard drive once already b/c I moved it wrong while it was running (another Dell). My ex and I also used Gateway (when they first started) in our ex company and their product was not much better, IMO. YMMV.
hooked 0 #5 February 13, 2003 I will definitely try the compressed air thing.....thumping it, oh maybe. There has been a few times, the computer just quit, and when I 'jiggled' the plug, it restarted. So first, we will replace the cord/plug. It is a tower not a laptop, it's not a Dell or a Gateway. I hate the thought of 'hubby' working on it. He kind of knows what he's doing, in a round about way. I sure hope it's just the plug or fan. Talk about 'withdrawal'. Last time he had to work on one of my computers, was a nightmare! J -------------------------------------- Sometimes we're just being Humans.....But we're always Human Beings. Hey, believe me, if taking it to an independent computer guru was an option, it would be there! (That ole male, mr. fix-it ego comes into play around here) If my computer goes, I'm using his! Jimbo 0 #12 February 17, 2003 I've gone through this a few times. The most likely source of the noise, in my experience, is the fan on the heatsink. I've replaced mine with an 80mm fan and it's damn near silent now. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
hooked 0 #13 February 17, 2003 It's in the process of being replaced as I type.....I'm using my hubby's computer (It's pathetic!). He loves me enough to give me the good computer, which is weird because that is the one he is replacing the fan on! All I can say is, it better work. I'm hoping it doesn't take all day. skygal3 0 #14 February 17, 2003 Isn't it terrible not having your own computer?? I killed mine Saturday night and a certain dz.commer is letting me borrow one of his until I can replace it. Isn't that sweet? It's not the same though. I miss my stuff terribly.
