wmw999 2,589 #1 February 19, 2003 My father takes this magazine; I read it when I can, and every time I do, I regret that I don't read more of it. It's wonderful. Not scared to have an opinion, not scared to call bullshit on anyone (including Europeans and Americans), and not scared to praise anyone either. Well written, and enough short articles that I can deal with it on those no-attention-span days Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

VivaHeadDown 0 #4 February 19, 2003 The subject was just enough to get him to open the thread, but not memorable to know what was going on. Very Smooth.
coconutmonkey 0 #5 February 19, 2003 The Economist is a great poli-sci periodical. Similar to Foreign Affairs for good information on world events and global economy. Mostly essay type articles, but not so deep that anyone without a degree drowns in the text. Browse it over a cappuccino next time you’re in Barnes & Noble.Hearts & Minds 2 to the Heart- 1 to the Mind- Home of the Coconut Lounge, Spa, & Artillery Range
charliezulu 0 #6 February 19, 2003 I've had to read that every week for years, and love it. Christian Science Monitor is pretty damned good, too. Mailed out every day, same format every day, and it really doesn't have much of an agenda. CZ
mattb 0 #7 February 19, 2003 I try and find time every week to read it cover to cover. If I'm flying or commuting on a train I generally get it done - but other weeks its tougher. For those who haven't read it - think Times/US News / etc. Now remember those magazines are written using 3rd grade english and perhaps 5th grade logic. The Economist is written for educated adults who don't want to be babied and also who want a global perspective, not just their country.
SpeedRacer 1 #8 February 20, 2003 Thanks for reminding me! It's been a while since I read The Economist, but I remember being very impressed with it. It really seemed to be very close to good, unbiased journalism. I may just get myself a subscription.
