i don't think you get to refer to the USA as "old" when comparing it to the UK ;)

and with their petrol prices the sign would read something like, "kidney, liver, heart"

I read yesterday, that the us only relies on the middle east for 11% of their oil import's. So if this is true, then I think the Gas companies are very guilty of price gouging. There definitely needs to be an investigation. And heafty fine's ect. need to be implemented when they Prove this to be true. One way the american public can help, is to look around before you buy gas.
It drives me crazy to see three gas stations on the same intersection, and one of them have gas for 7 or 8 cents more, and people are using that gas station. As long as we let gas companies Rape us they will. If no one went to the more expensive gas station, they would be forced to lower their prices. But as long as we keep using the more expensive gas station's, then the other's will raise their prices also, it is a domino effect, and we can do a lot to change it. Anyone that is using an expensive gas station, when the station next to it has cheaper gas should be beaten immediately.
I also cant understand how american's will drive around for a cheaper hamburger, but will buy the first gas they see. Also ever try and buy gas near a highway? That is flat out robbery, how they raise the price, as consumer's we deserve to be treated fair. We can change thing's but it will take an effort from everyone to do it. People need to realise, that your car will run with exxon, shell, bp whatever. Gas is Gas!

Yes and no. I worked for a guy who ran a fuel hauling company and he said that while most gas stations' gas comes from the same big tank at the distributor, most of them have their own set of additives/detergents that get added after the fact.

Also most companies only require that the stations use a certain % of "company" gas and they the fill the rest with "generic" gas.

Now, yes, for most cars it won't matter, but some engines are certainly sensitive to varying grades of gas. That being said.. "better" isn't always better. for instance, Subaru specifically recommends using 87octane and not higher because the engine is tuned for it and it can actually be detrimental to run higher gas.

But for the most part, i agree ;)

Oil is a commodity - it really doesn't matter where it comes from as far as price is concerned.

Not necesarily. Oil is sold on a world market, a change in supply or demand anywhere effects the prices everywhere.

So you agree with the need for these prices to be so high? I fully think that we are victims of gas companies using the threat of war as a excuse to price gouge. How much demand increase, or supply decrease do you think is going on right now? If there is justification to the incredible raise in cost, I would like to hear it.

It's not so much the reality as the speculation. People buy petroleum futures for more money if there is a looming shortage. That drives the price up.

>If there is justification to the incredible raise in cost, I would like to hear it.

There is only one real justification, and in a capitalist society, it is the only one a company needs: people will pay the higher price. If you sold pencils, and you could sell them for 10 cents or 25 cents and people would buy the same number in either case, what price would you set?

If the high price of gas offends you, don't pay it. Buy a diesel truck and use biodiesel. Buy a hybrid and pay 1/4 the amount for gas. Buy a natural gas car. Get a bike. That's the only real control you have. As long as you are willing to pay whatever gas costs, they will charge pretty much whatever they want.
