Shark 0 #26 February 26, 2003 Quote And if anyone thinks that politics or religion does not get talked about at a DZ, that is naive! It does, but it is rare. We have other things to talk about, like telling lies about our 4 way dive or who is doing who or whom. We also gather around the new meat and and tell other lies on our skydiving resume. bluskidave 0 #27 February 26, 2003 Its nice to know what are fellow skydivers from other parts of the world think about the good old U.S. of A. policy. All we seem to hear about is what the press feeds us.Lack of communication is a great cause of many problems.I love Aggie jokes as it is my alma mater but some of the freefly jokes are pretty witty
Muenkel 0 #28 February 26, 2003 I too am getting tired of all the political threads and have chosen not to participate in them for the most part. However, with that said, I think anyone who wants to should have the right to participate as long as they follow the rules of the forums. I agree with Skybytch that Talk Back serves a very useful purpose. It is a place to hang out, have fun and get to know eachother. Because we have Talk Back, I have noticed that the more topic oriented forums for the most part remain free from trivial jokes and hijackings. I love to go to those forums when I seriously want to learn something. Getting back to the political threads; I do want to thank Gawain and BillVon for intelligently presenting both sides of the issues and keeping it on a higher level. When I read the political threads, I tend to just read each of their posts and skip over the rest. The rest lately have seemed to be emotionally charged drivel. Just my opinion of course. Thanks Wendy, for bringing up this discussion. Chris _________________________________________ Chris
wildblue 7 #29 February 26, 2003 Quotejokes about groups can be funny, when not taken to an extreme that is obviously going to be hurtful Anything that 'goes too far' can be hurtful to someone, and they're always going to be out there. Hell, there's already a t-shirt out that says (looking like a newspaper headline on the front) "Tragedy ensues as 80s metal band Great White loses every single one of its 96 fans" - yes, that's incredibly wrong, but I giggled. Had I lost someone in that fire, I probably wouldn't have. Same thing with any tragedy. Remember the Challenger jokes? Did you laugh at any of those? I did. I'm sure if I knew someone that was on that craft I wouldn't have though. Even the jokes about other groups, someone in that group could very well be offended by what you think is just funny. All the jokes about priests and little boys that were going around for awhile - most were pretty funny, unles you're a priest or one of those boys. What about blond jokes? Ever told one of those? I'm sure there's some people with blond hair that don't find them funny at all - even to the point of being offended by them. So, if you've ever laughed at or told one of those jokes, I don't think you can get too pissed off when someone tells one that offends you. You can say "Yeah, that's not really funny" and explain why if you want, but I think that's about the extent of it. People need to lighten up a little. There is a difference between trying to be funny and trying to be malicious though - I think that's the line that needs to be defined.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
Guest #30 February 26, 2003 Quote Quote My dad said not to trace our ancestry back too far. It's mostly horse thieves probably. True, I did that once and realized that I had an Uncle Ug and Aunt Uhk-Uhk and they were very hairy I'm reminded of the "Far Side" cartoon where one caveman is lecturing several others. He points to a picture of the spiked tail of a dinosaur and says: "This thing is called the Thagomizer. After the late Thag Simmons." Edit: Paleontology exhibits have identified the spiked tail of the Stegosaurus as the "thagomizer". hehehe "The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
