sunman 0 #1 February 28, 2003 Allow me to attempt to make a long story short. My company rented a car for me when I was home for Christmas break. I ran over a damn rock in a dirt parking lot by accident (it was dark) which seriously damaged the underside of the vehicle. $2000 worth of damage to be exact. My company's insurace won't pay for it since I was not on "company time". Now my company is planning on taking $125 out of my paychecks until the damage is paid off. But here's the thing - I never signed anything stating that I would be responsible for the damages and I was never given the opportunity to purchase the optional insurance. I picked up the car at my company's headquarters. So should I tell my company to go screw themselves or should I suck it up and pay for the damages that I caused? $2000 is a lot of jump tickets... phatcat 0 #2 February 28, 2003 I voted to quit and go skydiving, since that's what I'm attempting to do. Maybe you should ask me again a few months from now and see if I'm doing okay or if I'm living in cardboard box

bobsled92 0 #4 February 28, 2003 Do you really want to work for a company that is SOOO stupid as to rent an UNinsured car? Who ever signed the paper work is at fault of no insurance. There is a "person" that made an executive desicion to rent it and NOT insure it that would result in the full $2000.00 damage amount. That person should be held accountable. Find out who owns the hand and fingers that signed the policy/terms of agreement._______________________________ If I could be a Super Hero, I chose to be: "GRANT-A-CLAUS". and work 365 days a Year. http://www.hangout.no/speednews/

sunman 0 #7 February 28, 2003 I think I'm going to nicely tell them that I WON'T be paying for the damages. Hopefully they won't be too pissed and just fire my sorry ass. But I'm going to quit my job and live in a trailer on a dz in about a year anyway, so who cares? I like my job and my company is usually good to me, but they can just eat it this time. It's not like I'm making shit loads of money anyway.
blewaway5 0 #8 February 28, 2003 Yeah, I voted tell them to f*** off. I could ramble on and tell you why, but it'd be so much easier just to say go back up and reread Bobsled's post. Truman Sparks for President
Squeak 17 #9 February 28, 2003 there was a thread previously about risk and responsibility. I would think that you are responsible for your actions. Your responsible for finding out the level of insurance and your responsible for the way you drive. It would seem to me that Hitting a rock that causes $2000USD damage is either driving too fast or not looking, or diving in a manner not suited to the conditions your were in. Any of these equate to operator error and therefore your should cough it up. . You drove you, you hit you pay You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing? akaGQ 0 #11 February 28, 2003 Id have to agree with Rich...Remember its always easier finding a job with a job than it is without one. Id keep track of everything that is going on and if they start to make deductions from your pay keep up with the pay stubs and such then when you find another job quit and then take it to an attourney. Then either sue for lost wages or whatever your heart so desires. You could sue for the simple fact that your company is full of dumbasses and they put you in an uninsured vehicle. - GQ ... it was the love of the air and sky and flying, the lure of adventure, the appreciation of beauty ... -Charles Lindberg
rgoper 0 #12 February 28, 2003 most companies that rent vehichles for their company personal, do in fact rent cars from an agency that has insurance on their cars. i'm not sure why your company is trying to make you pay, i'd have to tell them i wouldn't pay. the rental agency is not stupid enough to rent out cars, and not have insurance on them. in any event, your company should have industrial insurance for their company just for these types of incidences. they're just trying to rip you off. tell them hell no! in any event, you were on company time, and although it was a rental car it was leased to your employer..right? case closed, labor board.--Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

It isn't legal to take money of out an employees check without permission. Problem is, if the alternative is to lose your job, or get sued, or both, then most people will just give in. Damn rocks in a dirt parking lot don't cause $2000 worth of damage. I think the bigger issue is not how bad the company is ripping you off (which is a lot, in any case), but rather how likely it was that your little rock theory was probably another car. Or a house. Or an asteriod. Or a glacier. Or something that you should have been able to see with your headlights on. Unless your headlights were off, and then I just don't want to be involved in this thread anymore. Let's pretend this whole thing wasn't talked about and get back to more important things. AggieDave 6 #19 February 28, 2003 What we have here is a JFK single shot theory rock story. The rock, bends the rim on the right front wheel, bounces up into the engine compartment, totallying the radiator, the intake and the exhaust, then bounces off the ground, back up and puts a hole in the transmission, before bouncing back and taking the muffler clean off the car. It could happen.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
