Legal Question: Having USAF/ARMY on things?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed some experimental airplanes painted up to say "ARMY" or "USAF" on them, also seen some Cubs and whatnot painted that way. Is this legal? Is there anything wrong wiht putting the USAF and the AF logo on wings of things that are obviously not air force property?

They also have civilian registration numbers of approved size. AFAIK the only legal issue would be impersonation, which is not an issue with antiques or homebuilts or model airplanes.

THIS article talks about wearing uniforms, but clearly that's a slightly different case than painting your airplane.

THIS article actually explains why some people may do this and how to spot a phoney Navion L-17.

There is probably some obscure international law somewhere that I can't find about having civil aircraft in military paint schemes, but my guess is that as long as it's not going to be used to attack a foreign country, nobody's really going to care.

Well, they want to be painted like war birds...treat em like war birds...
Shoot one down, and see what happens.
