flyingferret 0 #1 March 6, 2003 There seems to be a rumor circulating right now that the Israelis have captured Bin Laden. I am not encouraging it, simply sharing in the hope that good karma will make it true http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/2825653.stm Isreali radio announced it earlier today, that Bush was expected to announce it tonight. There is a link to the Jerusalem Post, but their server is slashdotted http://www.jpost.com/ Me really wonders and hopes.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. wildblue 7 #3 March 6, 2003 So? It's not like al-Qaeda will fall apart without him. It might be good for morale or something, but it'd be more of a symbolic victory anyway. From what I hear, he's about to die anyway from some kidney problem or something - I forget exactly what it was.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
flyingferret 0 #4 March 6, 2003 Symbolic or not, it would likely affect the American economy, which is a big game of follow the leader anyway. That is good enough for me, obviously besides the desire to see justice done.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
jdhill 0 #5 March 6, 2003 The best thing that GWB could announce is that OBL was found dead after committing suicide when faced with imminent capture based on the information provided by his recently arrested #3 guy who gave him up during “mild” questioning … no martyrdom, just cowardice. wmw999 2,584 #10 March 6, 2003 If OBL is in custody, a formal trial, a la Adolf Eichmann, would allow him the opportunity to answer a lot of questions in public as well as in private. And he'd likely come off looking like a complete idiot. If we handle it according to our CURRENT laws (say, the way we did with Moussaoui), rather than making up special new ones, then we'll demonstrate that we walk the walk, we don't just talk the talk. As far as I know, there hasn't been a wave of protests about our treatment of Moussaoui, because he's been treated basically the same as other criminals, and allowed to make himself look like an ass. Which he's succeeded at quite admirably, too. Of course, my hope is that there is a LOT of questioning before then. And that we learn a whole lot about how to use family money to finance an international terror campaign in the interests of religious self-aggrandizement. I'd volunteer to help. jdhill 0 #11 March 6, 2003 Given OBL's stated wish to die a martyr, I think it unlikely that he would be captured alive. JoshAll that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
wmw999 2,584 #12 March 6, 2003 Oh, absolutely. But since my wishes are likely to have little impact on what happens to OBL, it doesn't cost much to go ahead and say it...
