mountainman 0 #1 March 9, 2003 Laura and I went to Safety Day 2003 today in Richmond, IN (Skydive Wayne County) and listened to many speakers. It was great ! Here are some photos of a couple jumps people did today. The photos are from the ground. http://www.jumpinduo.com/skydivingpics/safetyday03/ If you didn't go today, you should have ! It was a great review and it was nice to talk about skydiving with others who have bottled up since fall. Have a good one ! http://www.brandonandlaura.com

sinker 0 #3 March 9, 2003 thanks for the pics mountainman. Does it count if I was AT a DZ that HAD a safety day today? (I couldn't stay, wifey and I were busy house hunting) take it easy... md -the artist formerly known as sinker
Luna 0 #4 March 9, 2003 Yes, but I think most people on our DZ want to cancel it from now on. After some very nice presentations from our staff and the local rescue squad, they put up the first load of the day. It was a pretty bad spot and only the 2 tandems and one fun jumper made it back to the DZ. I left right behind the 2 paramedics who had been presenting to go round people up. I ended up driving one of the paramedics to the site where someone hooked in trying to avoid some obstacles. Double femured. Damn it, we just went over this stuff! Braked turns to avoid obstacles! People said something bad always happens on safety day. But it wasn't over! We had another guy on a later load who opened into line twists, which is normal for him. These were bad, though, but he kept trying to get out of them. Finally, around 600 feet he couldn't find his cutaway and pulled his reserve instead, which sniveled badly because of his low speed, but slowed him down just enough to save him. It downplaned right before he went in. Amazingly, he walked away with a sprained ankle. After that, the DZO made an announcement that safety day was cancelled and everyone should go back to being reckless and unsafe. We have a physician's assistant who jumps with us and was there. She brought out her bag and went to both incidents. After that, she kept the bag out for the rest of the day. How many of you can say that you had live demonstrations for safety day? What NOT to do! I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information!

bbarnhouse 0 #6 March 9, 2003 Actually, our safety day is an entire week-end. I went to the seminar last eve at 6:30 after jumping concluded. The seminar was instructed by Bryan Burke. The fine folks at Square2, PD and RI provided canopies and rigs for folks to test jump reserves. A great idea if one has never had a reserve ride or flown a 7 cell canopy. It dosen't matter how many jumps one has.. it never hurts to have a bit of a refresher course.
pilotdave 0 #7 March 9, 2003 Yep, not only was it safety day but also the season grand reopening and a beautiful day. I strolled in nice and late...12:30 or so, and manifested for load 1 which was on a 15 minute call. We ended up getting a whopping 3 loads (twin otter) up, and i got on 2 of them. It was fun and it was great to get back in the air for the first time since january, but a 2 hour drive out and another 2 hour drive back is pretty rough for 2 solo jumps. Any DZs do anything particularly interesting for safety day? Dave
fasterfaller 0 #8 March 9, 2003 I didn't go to safety day , but we did have a safety meeting before the jump off a 525' cliff
mountainman 0 #9 March 9, 2003 Glad to hear some of you made it safety day ! Too bad one DZ had a crappy day. Perhaps they were "overthinking" their procedures. *shrug* Well, maybe next time you guys should jump first and then do the seminars after... when it could all sink in first. Heh. Anyone else do anything good ?http://www.brandonandlaura.com
homer 0 #10 March 9, 2003 Sorry, the weather sucked so I went to the mountains to do a little fishing in the rain. That and my rigger hasn't called me about my reserve repack being finished. CSA #699 Muff #3804

AndyMan 7 #12 March 9, 2003 I answered 'yes', which is a lie. I barely left home today. My DZ is having their safety day next weekend, for reasons I'm don't quite understand... _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
FallingILweenie 0 #13 March 9, 2003 i didn't go because chicagoland's is next weekend... micheal, what did you think of archway?
sinker 0 #14 March 9, 2003 hey man... pretty cool there at Archway. 2nd time to visit, went about a month ago too. Very good folks there, esp. anita. This time, when I walked in, she immediately remembered who I was, when I was there last, everything! I was very impressed. And their leased Caravan is very hot! Too bad it wasn't flying on account of the hurricane force winds. can't wait to be up there jumpin. peace, michael -the artist formerly known as sinker

JumpHog 0 #20 March 9, 2003 Cross Keys put on a great safety day. We had some terrific seminars from Glenn Bangs, Monkey Claw, Heath Richardson, Paul Joseph, and the Williamstown EMT Squad. On top of that, we had the best weather that we've had in 4 months here. Everybody took advantage of the good weather, keeping the Caravan flying full loads non-stop until sunset. Thanks to all of the speakers and to Skydive Cross Keys for a well-run safety day.

mountainman 0 #22 March 9, 2003 Wow Wingnut ! Did you guys all practice your first aid that you just learned ? If you are under snow, I hope that next week you are going to have more luck. I was suprised they got the hanger doors open. I guess with blue skies, a C182, and skydivers... you can see great things happen. LOL Man, I wish our rigs were in date. That would have been great to make a jump yesterday. Ah well. We will be up in 2 weeks if the weather is halfway decent. http://www.brandonandlaura.com
riddler 0 #23 March 9, 2003 Yes! It was good (I thought). We had two cut-aways, one injury that required 911 and an ambulance. The funniest part was when one of our tandem instructors got in the hanging harness and cutaway, and pulled the "fake" reserve. Only because of the spinning, his real reserve soft pillow came down and he pulled that one Got to see a reserve deployment on the ground. They had Booth's new skyhook system there and we got to take a look up close. It looks like a good system. Oh - also got to see a preview of the WFFC video. You guys will *not* be disappointed. It rocks. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
