Where do you stand?

Has anyone else noticed that the bad language and name calling comes predominantly from one side in this discussion?

This seems to be a trend.

I for one have only taken the side of the President of the USA. He thinks it's time to use force. So be it. He know far more about this situation then I. So who am I or yourself to question his authority on the matter.

I will not make excuses for the name calling. I do know this is a very emotional issue for alot of people. When you get your juices flowing you tend to lash out. There is plenty of name calling on both sides of this fence.. So don't stand on your side of the fence throwing daisies then complain when the other side smack you with a big rock. You pick your side and your weapon in the debate.

I have to assume that you weren't paying attention during all the previous occasions when US leaders lied to the US people and Congress. During my lifetime the following administrations were known to have lied: Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, BushI, Clinton.

IMO, anyone who trusts any administration's "secret information" is living in cloud-cuckoo land.

This sounds like "expect personal, violent replies to rational, non-personal-attack posts if someone disagrees with them." Such replies really aren't expected here, and a disagreement with someone does not justify a personal attack or a violent reply - even if you disagree vehemently.

sometimes one must regress to a level of speech that others can universally understand to get their attention. i guess i should have said we are the largest and meanest nation on the face of the earth? and that we have a vile and evil temper, and throw temper tantrums to express our displeasure at someone else's attempts to make a fool of us at the expense of our sons and daughters. i'm glad the earth's surface is 2/3rds water, because if there were anymore small nations to attack, i'm sure we'd find them, or vice-versa. but then again, we've been arogant for so long we took it for granted that no one dare to fool with us, for any reason.

Umm... I'm a citizen of the US. I have every right to question what the elected officials of the US are doing. That right was given to me by "our forefathers" and has been defended by thousands and thousands of Americans in uniform. And before someone says I have no right to disagree with any elected official because I've never been in the military - had the US Army not had a rule stating that I couldn't be both a soldier and a single parent I might have been one of those Americans in uniform.

As long as you keep those weapons sheathed here on the forums, great. Once more with feeling - if you can't keep it from getting personal, DON'T POST IT HERE.

That is your right in the US to decide you don't trust the President. I'm not going to argue the point he might have intel or he might not. No one on this forum that I know of is in the oval office or one of his staff. So they could give us the deffinitive answer to the question.

So I support our president for one reason. That's the men and women in the front lines. I don't think for a minute he would be putting our people in harms way unless he (his staff) knows something we don't.

Ok I've stated earlier I might not put to words what I meant. I wasn't saying you dont have a right to question him.

I was having difficulty understanding Rhino's post but I cannot agree with the US-IRA comparison.

If (they probably have) the Iraq government has actively supported terrorist acts against an unfriendly country the that's state sponsored terrorism.

The US government did not fund, train or actively support the IRA in the IRA campaign in the UK.

A small minority of US citizens did but that is not the same as claiming that the government did. From the folk I've met here, IRA sympathy is based on a lack of knowledge about what happens in Ireland/UK and because of the War of Revolution where the UK was the "tyrannical power".

i've got some ocean front property in arizona, cheap to, how many acres would you like for me to reserve for you today sir? get serious. wyubya would throw his own mother to the wolves, let alone think twice about putting the young people of our nation in harms way. i guess your also under the impression that kennedy/johnson/nixon didn't know our troops were in harms way during viet-nam right? ahh...forget about it

That's like saying "the USA has acted in point like an IRA like organization."

It's easy to pick out bits of postings and ridicule them for incoherence.
It's a bit harder to actually look for the meaning behind them, and discuss that meaning.
I challenge you to try the latter.

Fool me once, shame on you....

I used to be very very hawkish, until I realized the pols were lying to the people and using soldiers as disposable pawns in their political games. Now I adopt the Missouri attitude of "Show me".

Anyone who trusts a career politician to tell the truth is, IMO, living in cloud cuckoo land.

"Trust, but verify" was the smartest thing Reagan ever said.

The paradigm swung 180 degrees on 9/11

The world is a different place..

No. The mainland US is a different place.

The rest of the world has had terrorism all along. We were just too far away (other than the fairly abortive attempt at the WTC, other terrorist threats were from Americans, or were in foreign countries).

True..

Just like before we joined some past world wars the rest of the world has had terrorism but once we became involved in the world wars things changed.. As will the war on terror and the rest of the world "Hopefully to their benefit" due to us joining or heading the war on terrorism.

we've been having this conversation for 2 days. i keep hearing a lot of people essentially saying "yeah, let's go eradicate them" first of all it is my belief that 98% of the people exclaiming these remarks are between the ages of 18-25, not in the military, no family abroad, are not world travelers, and have no family abroad or plan on joining the armed forces in the near future. to these people i say this "your vote don't count" either sign up, get in line or get in the position to be in a line...somewhere, or simply be quite. FYI, i have a 23 year old son in the army in Quatar right now, my 18 year old "signed the dotted line today"

Breaking as we speak...Reuters is reporting that the UN is pulling it's troops off the Kuwaiti/Iraq border. Stationed there since 1991's ceasefire acting as a tripwire of sorts, the UN troops are being removed because of the impending action. (Per MSNBC talking heads...)

(Edit: Clarification...the removal is of the civilian staff, 230 in number, and are being moved to Kuwait city; more will be removed in days to come. There are 775 Bangladeshi units staying in place...)

As it's the UN doing this, I am not sure how sure we are has anything to do with it...(that just confused me all to heck!! LOL).

Silly is taking troops away from where they will be needed, according to a ceasefire agreement made 12 years ago. Silly is not enforcing that agreement 'til now. Silly is believing the bully Sadam...

But I only came here to share the breaking news...not to get all involved as I'm leaving for the office...sigh...

Have a good one, Richard...

Please, please for the love of god man will you please spell the name of the country right. It is spelled QATAR in every other country in the world. I feel I have to correct you on this or some local might see it and take offense and think that no Amaricans that live in the region care to learn about their country enough to spell it right. Sorry just bothered me.

kutter...quitar...guitar...qutar...qatar..quatar...whatever. i've been engadged in several disscussions regarding this issue, over the spelling and pronunciation of this small but very vital country. no matter which world map you look at, it is spelled and pronounced differently in different parts of the globe, but you knew that already, right? been there lately?
