Libraries Warn of FBI Spying on Reading Habits

Recommended Posts

hmm.

After Sep 11 I saw a billboard that read

"Don't take our freedom for granted"

I couldn't help thinking one way some apply that is to take away some of our freedoms in the guise of protecting it.

It is a rather difficult problem to solve. No answers here.

I can just hear the Limbaugh defenses now:

"Sure, they arrest US citizens and hold them forever without trial or representation now, but they only do that to criminals. If you're not a criminal, you have nothing to fear."

"And why are these liberal whiners complaining about the ability to get library records? We could always do that, this just makes it easier to get people who are getting books about violent protest methods, or even people who fit a terrorist profile - like people who read books about Iraq or Saudi Arabia. At least the books that say they're not evil terrorists; the ones that do are still OK."

"And so computers will now read your every purchase, from alcohol to porn to consumer electronics, and store that information so it can be searched by agents. Hey, they're the good guys, remember? And if you are buying diesel fuel and fertilizer, well, good thing we caught you before you built another Oklahoma City bomb. And if you're buying some porn we find disgusting - well, it's your own fault for buying it, now, isn't it?"

"WAIT A MINUTE! You're talking about requiring SUV's to get 10% better gas mileage? That goes against every American freedom our forefathers fought and died for! What are you, a nazi?"

FBI, CIA, NSA and such has been monitoring things for quite some time, the new laws regarding internet and such will just make it legal and easier for them to do it.
I am pretty much anti-government when ti comes to these big brother things. Take mandatory seat belt laws.....Like that law was passed for our protection??? In Illinois I can ride amotorcycle without a helmet, but required to wear a seat belt....I think it is nothing more that giving a cop an excuse to pull someone over at will, under the guise of "no seatbelt".

Criminalization of the trivial is a sure sign of a police state. On May 25th it will be a felony in the USA to possess a model rocket motor with more than 2.2 ounces of propellant in it unless you have a permit from the Federal Government, and an explosives bunker to store the motor in.
