News about Le Roy's surgery

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to pass on the update about Le Roy's eye surgery since he's having a time of it still trying to type and read. A bit too much strain right now I think. Here's something he asked me to pass on tho:

had surgery on monday... in pain tryign to type and read ....was in a ball on mon night tue and wed... todday is first day i can stamd tp keep eyes open.... things a re still blurryy... can youpass this ijnfo to talkback for me? thansk you are the best...
Le Roy

I'm not sure about the being in the ball part...sounds fun perhaps ;)

It's good to hear all went well. Surgery on the eyes has got to be at least a little freaky!!

LeRoy, I swear, I thought someone was sticking hot pokers into my eyes when I had it done.

USE THE DROPS!!!!!

Also, you might want to drink more water while you're recovering. I smoke, and drink caffeine, and both exacerbate the pain. Drinking water helps. I was writhing in pain for nearly 5 days, too...had to get a refill of those way cool drugs.

Hang tight, it will pass. But like I said, drink more water, and use the drops.

Basically, LASEK is a variation on PRK/LASIK where the epithelium (the very first layer above the cornea)is lifted off and the correction is done to the surface of the cornea. It is for people who have corneas that are too thin to cut with the microkeratome used in LASIK. My boss just had LASIK done and he had me research the various options beforehand. I actually watched the procedure being done (there was a glass wall separating the operating room from the waiting room and they had a TV with the camera view). It was pretty interesting, kinda like A Clockwork Orange when they propped his eyes open.

Anyway, LASEK takes longer to heal and hurts more than LASIK, but it is a safer procedure. Even if the epithelium is accidentally damaged, then the procedure continues as ordinary PRK. If they screw up the flap in LASIK, it's not good at all.

Personally, I'm waiting for wavefront LASIK to be perfected. If I'm gonna have my eyes operated on, I want supernomal vision!

It's not fun, but it's not always disasterous, either. They screwed up the flap on my husband's left eye, made it too small to do the laser procedure through. Short term sucked immensely. For the first 3 days after he could see 20/15 out of one eye, and 20/200 or whatever out of the other. Causes some unusual problems. Monday he got a contact for the left eye that solved that problem. Still had to go through all the drops in that eye because the flap was cut. Then after about 3 months, once the flap had healed, he spent another week not being able to see out of one eye because you can't wear contacts for a week before the surgery. Then he got it re-done, with no more problems. Just had to go through the whole healing crap over again. The flaps do heal, and once they do they can be re-cut. Not the end of the world. There are much worse things that can go wrong with LASIK.

Well, that does sound pretty bad. But screwing up the flap can and does lead to some rather unpleasant outcomes, like uncorrectable vision and corneal transplants. I'm glad to hear it worked out for your husband.

Now that I think about it, maybe I'll wait for intraocular lenses...that microkeratome is freaky!

Did you get LASEK because you weren't a good candidate for LASIK, or did you just opt for it because you were worried about the flap?

I actually wanted prk for military reasons... but turns out I can get lasEK with better results and still do what I want to in in the military
