Michele 1 #1 March 17, 2003 I can't log on at home. There is no way. My computer hates me. I know it's sitting there, laughing at me. It knows, you see, that I don't understand it. It is plaguing me, preventing me from even getting onto my home page. It won't even let me shut it off properly...so I run a virus scan...nothing. Defrag...nothing. Hard reboot....less than nothing. I can't even access the net to drop cookies.... At some point during the day, I figure that since it's St. Patrick's day, Murphy is out to get me...and he really is.... And I call Earthlink...and they tell me to call Compaq. So I call Compac, and, without exaggeration, 97 minutes after the phone call starts he tells me to take it apart and bring it back to the service people...keep in mind all we have done is turn it on, turn it off, turn it on, turn it off....go to F8, cntrol/alt/delete...wait, what do you mean it doesn't work?....back and forth, forth and back...on and off, off and on. Safe mode, regular mode...nothing. NOTHING!!! Nada. Zip. Zero....and I say it seems like something's sucking the CPU...but I don't have programs running.... After another 30 minutes and 2 more additional people, they finally have me go to the control/alt/delete thing and go into performance tabby...and there it is... vsmon.exe...99% CPU...it's a problem with Zone Alarm, it would seem...So I delete it, everything seems to be working fine. I hang up with the guy, who tries to make me commit to writing a good customer service report for him (2 hours turning the thing on and off is not good customer support....), and go to dial in.... AND I STILL CAN'T GET ON THE FREEEEEKIN THING!!!!! (I'm posting this from work...) Anone have any ideas? I'll be checking in here often this afternoon...I really am computer illiterate, but I just can't seem to look forward to another 2 hour phone call to people who have me turn it on and off, hit F8, and then turn it off again.... Save me. Please. Save me... Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~

Zenister 0 #5 March 17, 2003 you DELETED Zone Alarm??! or UNINSTALLED it? there is a big difference. Deleting programs is a really bad idea in anything Win95+____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. RevJim 0 #6 March 17, 2003 Michele, Zone Alarm modifies your internal proxy settings. In non geek terms it forces everything to and from the internet to go through it. Did you just delete it from your start menu, or did you fully uninstall it? If all you did was delete it, your net connection will NOT work.Try and uninstall it from Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs. If that doesn't fix it, then reinstall it over the top of your old install, to update the settings. Let us know what happens, mmmm kay? It's your life, live it! bwilling 0 #8 March 17, 2003 QuoteSo I call Compac, and, without exaggeration, 97 minutes after the phone call starts he tells me to take it apart and bring it back to the service people... Hey girl, 97 minute phone calls suck, but as much as you don't want to take it apart and take it to a service center, this is not really bad advice... it's infinitely easier to trouble shoot PC problems when you have the machine in front of you, and can look at it directly... Too bad you live so far away, because it's common knowledge that I will work for food or beer. I pretty much won't try to trouble shoot PC problems long distance anymore (it's too hard), but I tell friends and co-workers that if they bring me the offending machine and a nice 6 pack of beer (no Coors light!), it'll probably get fixed! :-) "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got." Michele 1 #12 March 18, 2003 Geez, guys...(Bryce, how's the new house? Congratulations - and you didn't even tell me!!) I'd give 2 whole six packs to anyone, whatever brand they want, should they be able to fix the machine... In answer to the questions... 1. I deleted vsmon.exe from the cpu menu thing. 2. I hate computers. I love computers. This is a love/hate kind of thing - very dysfunctional. 3. I will, when I get home, uninstall ZA totally from the 'puter. 4. If you never hear from me again, it is because my computer is possessed...and has attacked me. 5. How do I restore my homepage stuff once I've uninstalled ZA? Ack.......I swear, I'll buy whatever beer anyone wants. Really....or even a bottle of something a little harder. But I get a shot of it, too... Michele 1 #13 March 18, 2003 Lummy, you asked: Quote"What is the computer doing, not doing? Is it running REALLY really slow? Do you get any error messages or pop up screens? are you having problems getting on the internet?". Yes. No to error messages, some pop up screens, yes to everything else. Never did make it onto the 'net today. Last night, page loading was incredibly slow...can't even access games vid cd. Dial up connection is at 52.0 kps, which is normal for me, all is fine that way. In addition, I cannot get the computer to shut down unless I trip the power switch. QuoteWhat Operating system? Win95, 98, 2000? Home edition of WIndows XP QuoteVSMON at 99% cpu.. That would be McAfee Virus scan monitor, not Zone alarm. When I ran a google search on this, I came up with a list of things regarding ZA, including a forum which describes this exact issue. Are you sure it's McAfee? I am thinking there may be a problem with McAfee and ZA not playing well together - about a month ago, I installed Spamkiller, but have never used it because I can't figure it out (told you I'm an illiterate). I am going to uninstall the whole she-bang...but then I'll be without a firewall, and I don't think that's a good idea, either. Sigh...
