When you see in Cypress Test Certificate: DOM 5/2001 Unit is airworthy Until: 08/2013 Does this means unit can be used until 01/08/2013 or 31/08/2013 ? Thanks Blue skies! Or can we leave the cypres in until the scheduled repack? Assuming you are followinging U.S. rules -- 105.43(c): "If installed, the automatic activation device must be maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions for that automatic activation device." You are not required to have an AAD in your rig. If you do, though, then it must be in date even if it is not turned on. When the AAD expires (or needs a 4- or 8-year check, or needs batteries because the current set is dead, etc), the rig cannot be jumped. If you want to jump it, the rig must be opened and the AAD serviced or removed. Mark
pchapman 280 #6 July 25, 2012 Yes, an expired AAD must be pulled out in many jurisdictions, like the USA. In practice I think it isn't uncommon for someone to just keep jumping the rig until the next repack, and then remove the AAD. As a rigger, at the previous repack I would have marked very clearly on the repack card when the rig timed out due to the AAD, earlier than the normal 180 day cycle. But if a jumper sneaks it by manifest, that's their issue...
