Genie 0 #1 March 19, 2003 On the speech Mr Bush gave he said he was going to free Iraq. BEaring in mind that 2/3rds of the iraq population are shi'a muslims, ie fairly fundamentalist - what if they decide they would like to put in a taliban style government - will the US let them? Tonto 1 #2 March 19, 2003 I think by "free" Mr Bush means free to do what he wants them to do. Seems Ironic that the man they want out is also the man they wanted in. Saddam has not changed. It's the year of the Pig.
miked10270 0 #3 March 19, 2003 I'd guess that "post-liberation" there will be a period of Joint Govenrment, say similar to Germany post 1945, With a British, US, Russian and French sector. And what if the Kurds demand their "freedom" to join with their brothers in Turkey and create a new Kurdistan? Whose side will we be on? And if Iran threatens the (neccessarily weak) new government in Iraq, how far will we go to defend them militarily? Worth some thought _before_ it happens. I think we've already made that choice. We're allowing Turkey to enter northern Iraq in exchange for them letting us use their air space.
AggieDave 6 #6 March 19, 2003 And I thought this was a sex question... Guest #9 March 19, 2003 QuoteAnd if Iran threatens the (neccessarily weak) new government in Iraq, how far will we go to defend them militarily? We'll mostly find the Shias in Iran helping the long-oppressed Shias in Iraq establish another Islamic Republic. This will in turn keep whackos like the Taliban from cowing the population and taking over. As for the Kurds, I think they'll take half a loaf and hope for the rest later as they establish an independent state in Northern Iraq. The Oil Kingdoms aren't happy with any outcome, because they fear (quite rightly) that the overthrow of Saddam will put the writing on their walls."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." racer42 0 #10 March 19, 2003 It's a pretty complicated questions. Shi'a Muslims in that region are Arabs not Persian. The Shi'a also tend to be less radical than their Sunni brethren on the Arabian Pennisula. Iraq also has a 70 year history of secularism and may not be so inclined to radically alter their political structures. I hope that helps...unless of course the question was about sex. If that's the case I just roll over and fall asleep.L.A.S.T. #24 Co-Founder Biscuit Brothers Freefly Team Electric Toaster #3 Co-Founder Team Non Sequitor Co-Founder Team Happy Sock
Guest #11 March 19, 2003 I left out the Persian-vs-Arab part of the equation, so I appreciate your pointing it out."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
Guest #12 March 19, 2003 In a valley near the Iranian border near the town of Darbandikhan (about 200 km northeast of Baghdad), 600-700 soldiers of the armed wing of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) paraded for reporters. The Iranian-backed fighters are part of the 5,000-man "Badr Brigade" based in northern Iraq. Those seen by the reporters were in their late 30s and early 40s, wearing new camouflage uniforms and carrying small arms (including AK-47 assault rifles and RPGs). They also displayed a small number of off-road vehicles armed with antiaircraft and heavy machine guns. - Adam Geibel"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
