Guadalcanal is on of the Solomon Islands and used to house a Japanese airbase in WWII. Well, before it was conquered by the Americans. Still, it doesn't really seem to fit here...... bmcd308 0 #5 March 19, 2003 It is my understanding that the insignia of the First Marine Division was created to honor the very large number of members of that division who died at Guadalcanal. I may have the story wrong (and if I do no doubt some jarhead will kick my ass), but I think that the Japanese successfully bombed a munitions storage facility there, resulting in some astounding number of US Marine casualties.
