TRYING TO HELP - by W. Wayne Schields of Wichita Falls

All the rhetoric on whether or not we should go to war against Iraq has got my insane little brain spinning like a roulette wheel. I enjoy reading opinions from both sides but I have detected a hint of confusion from some of you.

As I was reading the paper recently, I was reminded of the best advice someone ever gave me. He told me about the kiss method (keep it simple, stupid!) So, with this as a theme, I'd like to apply this theory for those who don't quite get it. My hope is that we can simplify things a bit and recognize a few important facts.

Here are 10 things to consider when voicing an opinion on this important issue:

1) Between President Bush and Saddam Hussein ... Hussein is the bad guy.

2) If you have faith in the United Nations to do the right thing keep this in mind, they have Libya heading the committee on human rights and Iraq heading the global disarmament committee. Do your own math here.

3) if you use Google search and type in "French military victories," your reply will be "did you mean French military defeats?"

4) if your only anti-war slogan is "no war for oil," sue your school district for allowing you to slip through the cracks and robbing you of the education you deserve.

5) Saddam and bin laden will not seek united nations approval before they try to kill us.

6) Despite common belief, Martin Sheen is not the president. He is an actor and only plays one on TV

7) Even if you are anti-war, you are still an "infidel!" and bin Laden wants you dead, too.

8) If you believe in a "vast right-wing conspiracy" but not in the danger that Hussein poses, quit hanging out with the dell computer dude.

9) We are not trying to liberate them.

10) Whether you are for military action or against it, our young men and women overseas are fighting for us to defend our right to speak out. We all need to support them without reservation.

Good one.

LOL, the battalion's motto that I commanded with was "No Slack". It was originally "No Fucking Slack" but the PC crowd thought that might offend someone. Now killing them......... that doesn't offend them.;)

And a few more:

1. Despite rumors, Bin Laden and Hussein are not the same people. Killing one will have no effect on the other; if anything, Bin Laden will dance in the streets if Hussein is killed. They hate each other's guts.

2. Hussein's gang did not fly the airliners into the twin towers. This war is not "payback" for 9/11 no matter how cool that idea sounds when you yell it at the TV.

3. The only people dumber than the people who think this war is "all about oil" are the people who are positive it has absolutely nothing to do with oil.

4. This war is not a 'fight against terrorism.' The CIA agrees with Middle Eastern experts that this war will increase terrorism in the US both immediately and in the future, as more religious extremists are convinced that the US is out to kill Arabs. This war may be neccessary, but there will be a price - and that price may be the Sears Tower. We have to accept that _before_ we go into battle.

5. This war, plainly put, is a concerted effort to topple the government of a man who is a danger to several of our allies, and who is a destabilizing influence in an area where we need stability. Just because it's not payback, or it's not about ending terrorism, should not change the support we give our troops.

First sir, let me state that we don't completely agree on very much. That aside, if we're ever in the same place-the drink of your choice is on me. Well said

I wouldn't go quite that far. Having a common enemy has made stranger bed partners in the past. They also both support a common cause, the support of a Palestinian state and hatred of Shi'ite Muslims.

This isn't entirely true. The CIA and the FBI believe that the threat of terrorism is increased due to this attack. There are no known specific terrorist plots that will be triggered by this war. This war is partly a preventative measure against future terrorist attacks. It will eliminate someone who is potentially a supplier and a known supporter of terrorism.

I agree 100%. I believe we have to do this but it still made me sick when I heard bombs were falling.
